Concerning Artillery

I don't think this is very high on your agenda but i think it still needs to be addressed, I think the current artillery system is very unrealistic. to my knowledge artillery is not fully automated, and still requires skill to effectively operate.

I would like to see MANNED artillery. now the first thing most people will think is "man who would want to do that?" see all those people waiting for cobras at the al basrah airport?
maybe the US could win if just a fraction of them were providing some form of support for the troops.

I believe BF2 currently uses the LW155
Image
while this is new technology, I think it's more likely for the marines to use traditional technology as this is fairly new.
I propose they use the M-198, you'll more likely then not have seen multiple clips of it firing rounds in Iraq on the nightly news.

non-automated artillery encourages alot of teamwork.
in fact you might have a 2 or 3 man squad devoted to fire support.
you would need a spotter and one or two CREWMEN firing the machine.
communication is encouraged as well.

squad A is pinned in the Al Basrah streets, they need fire support at D7.
1. Vanilla BF2
Commander: Roger that
*commander right clicks* *howitzer automatically finds target fires some rounds* sure enough all 8 rounds hit the target exactly where the commander wanted.

2. Project Reality
Squad leader to commander "my squad is pinned at D2 requesting fire support"
Commander to Artillery Squad "alpha is pinned at D2, fire at will"
*crew fires several rounds*
Spotter "south 2 degrees"
*crew fires another barrage eliminating Insurgent squad*

what i do not support is a "loader class" as no one really does want to spend their time on BF2 loading rounds into a howitzer.

Now if anyone wants to complain about balance, this brings in a new aspect for insurgent/MEC special forces.
  • A sniper can take out an artillery crew, if it's not manned, it can't fire
  • killing the spotter, will reduce the effectiveness of the artillery
  • since artillery will be more critical, blowing it up could delay the other teams precious fire support for several minutes
even if you don't add the M-198 (my favorite artillery piece next to the Flak-88 ) and create manned artillery, it can change the way the game is played, adding a whole new element.
Thanks!

cool idea proberly thought of before but
would be mint if implemented

and i'd load for a round if it ment the artillary piece became more effective
no I in team remember

I am not an expert at artillarry, nor fired one before. Bit I do know that having a single person operate it could be a disaster. IRL, the person calls out coordinates. The arty team should somehow place these coorinates so it wont fire off somewhere out there

Yeah it is more realistic isn’t it?

I would also like to request 3 layers of High Explosive shells on a target and then be the one trying to correct the fire. That would almost be like in a real trainer.

Think something like this has been suggested before though?

But in terms of how to implement the idea into a platoon sized project reality team, working on such small maps we play on so far…well I haven’t got a clue?

I was thinking a spotter and two squadmembers with crewman kits operating the piece, real life howitzer teams have alot more operators, but the most on a team is 32 and we can't have 1/3 of the players operating artillery.

How about just mess with the model/animation to include people looking things that do the loading animation?

I know the dev's wouldn't add it because it's "too much work for so little" or whatnot, but it would be preferable IMO to manned by player arty.

The devs could get rid of the artillery system altogether, and just create stationary weapons (like a mounted MG) with a meter showing the angle & direction, and maybe give it 3 types of shells. the hardest part would be making the models, other than that essentially it's coding a huge mounted grenade launcher

The devs want teamwork, if they keep it so a squad leader requests and the commander just right-clicks, there is no new teamwork aspect.

I actually liked BF1942's artillery, where you used binoculars and had to manually target things.

I remember EoD mod, on one map (Hill, or something like that) where you fired the artillery and could really do some damage if you got it on target. It was pretty fun to use, and you saw what damage you were doing, so it was worth it to sit there and use it.

I know POE2 has manned mobile arty. If someone spots a target with the binos, while your occupying the turret you can then have access to a commander type of zoom which allows you to range in your rounds.

K.... unlocked until something else persuades me to lock it.

thanks for unlocking it eddie, anyways i was reading some other threads about this, some of the devs were talking about mobile artillery. are you guys still working on this?

AFAIK they currently aren't. Maybe one day though.

Hence the model for the AS90?

Look at the date it was submitted. It is most likely suspended as I have seen no sign of this *anywhere else*

I didn't like how it worked out in BF1942 (little reward for spotting)

but i think it'd work SO WELL in PR

RIGHT ON THE MONEY

I Totally agree..one of the main wpns I used in the original BF when it came out was the Self Propelled. I would also like to see manned...by 2 or more crewmen..not just one person. It would give the enemy an objective worth taking out! If I recall BF Vietnam had artillery in there Kahe Sahn (spelling?) map...then it should be easy to add to the PR mod.

Mortars are planned for the future. Additionally, I think that mortar carriers are being looked into but dont quote me on that.

they should have it where if somebody with those SOFLAM nocs clicks a spot on the map where they want arty, it will give them a grid location, like Latitude Longitude stuff and to get arty to hit that spot, the commander has to go up to the arty and enter it like a vehicle and then typ in the quardinents given to him by the spotter.

If you wanted to be realistic about it you would also need a FO and/or RTO with proper maps, and a protracter to call it in. Would be nice to have but would require too many moving parts which I doubt many people would fill to be effective in the "Realistic" sense.

Spotter "south 2 degrees" And it would be: (Their call sign) this is (Your call sign) adjust (right/left/down/up) #Meters + # Degree's if R or L.... little in depth. Plus Splash over / Flash / Fire for effect would be a little more than some people would be able to handle.
