The ParaTrooper Class/Squad

Now, I did some searching and I did not find anything involving this, but is seems that it would be quite obvious. If I am wrong in thinking that this is an original post please forgive me. I was just reading the thread on the Merlin modifications and got this picture in my head:

Camera cuts to the outside of Merlin high in the sky at night. Cut to a shot behind the solders, the small onboard lights dimly lighting the helicopter from the pitch blackness outside, and then the red jump light light turns green. Watch the door open, and see the squad jump out into a black abyss, ready to fight.

Then my brain went from "Cinematic mode" into "PR mode" (You know you play PR too much when..... your brain has a PR mode too, you probably play PR too much. ) and I though this would be a cool class. I don't know too much about the "rules" of the BF2 engine so I'll just say what my ordinal idea was:

- Give the kits some kinds of restrictions, something to make it “different”, IE: Less clips, no grenades, something like that.
- Make it only available to one squad, maybe like a commander power that could be used once a game, making or giving a squad these powers. If possible this might be useful with .6 supposedly adding new commander rolls
- Make sure that squad always has some way of getting in the air, maybe like a "locked" helicopter only for one squad, not an instant spawn one, just one that is only for the paratroopers
- Give the "Paratrooper SL some kind of "Paratrooper/Officer kit"
- Make it so if you are in the "Paratrooper" squad you get a different list of kits. So your squad could have Medics/Riflemen/SpecOps. All of these kits would be different than the "regular" kit but still do there assignment
- Give the entire squad a “weapon” that puts a glow stick on their head for decent to avoid collisions
- This is one that I would like to discuss: Don’t let the squad drop Rally Points, maybe make them focus more on tragic hits of things like AA and commander assets, instead of just a massive attack from behind enemy lines.
I’m not so sure as to how much of this can be actually done, please post comments/suggestions.

This prolly can't happen because of engine limitations, but maybe an idea to combat the spawning, would be you have to wait for your whole squad to die (cs style) before you and your squad can parachute in again.

Sounds like a cool idea though, having a specialised squad that only the commander could assign. Could even expand upon this and make the paratrooper squad a true 'spec op' squad about to sabotage stuff at the enemy base (although if they spawn camp I'll ***** and moan :p )

This is a great idea, but i doubt the engine can do it.
damn you BF2 engine!

A SL can ask CO for a Parapilot kit. the para pilot can ask for another Drop from CO with 5 Para kits.
the para pilot can perhaps deploy a parapilot-only heli.
the para kits would have a medic, spec ops, rifleman, light AT, DMR para version kits

Why not change spec ops to Para? I mean the SAS rarely fight alongside the regular army, but the paras do.

Doubt it's gonna happen. The maximum ceiling height we currently have in BF2 is around 1000ft. IRL you need to deploy your parachute with 3000ft minimum because of the speeds you'll reach.
It would be so many kits added if you could pick a para class and then a specific trade.
I am also pretty sure no paratooper squad or even the special air service are going to jump out of a helicopter to commence an airborne operation.

No, but an a10 doesn't fly at 10mph, 5m above the ground to hit a stationary target either. Para > Spec Ops

another problem being, jumping off buildins with a parachute, good idea though

Well you could make the para shoot only used once. I don't think the ceiling is a problem with realism as most all air vehicles are not "realistic" (A10 flying 5m over the ground to do a "bombing run") I do like he idea of making specops a Paratrooper but i think there needs to be some limitation, so everyone wont go Para "the riflemen w/ the parashoot". I also liked the idea of the comannder dropping kits, he could just drop them somewhere where the squad is. Mabey like a lock out thing for other squads so they cant get them?

Although if we're being specific the SAS would use a Hercules as far as I'm aware.

Could a chute be like a weapon? Instead of pressing 9 or whatever key you bind it to, it's actually a weapon you use with 1 ammo that has like a 100 minute reload on it?

hehe... Well bob, its been a long standing problem with bf2. I think chutes are hard coded so that if you have them... you have them permanently.

in general, paradropping in PR is a stupid tactic. Used to be done all the time and they took the chutes out for a reason.

well there was a time where i had a squad of spec ops soldiers and our squad leader was a heli pilot, he would hover very high over a enemy check point, and we would all just jump out at once and easily take the flag by complete suprise, and we kept on doing it over adn over again and my team easily won that game, if any of you guys were in my squad at that time you know what i am talking about

Concerning height issues, the swedish airborne units have parachutes which can be deployed down to 75m, yes around 230'. And if we have it, I guess both the US and GB have it...

must have been playing a shit team. Ive seen good squads attempt paradrop tactics (DVB, all great guys) over and over and over, and on a decent map like jabal against a team with half of a brain, you get cut down every time.

Depending on height, chuting in isn't really effective in most cases.. Airport is a key example where a vodnik behind the crates can just take out every single chute as it comes down.

Doing a low insertion over water and just dropping out of the helo is much more effective, but most maps aren't designed to support it. I just like the thought of a few Paras bailing out of a Merlin, and even if that isn't possible, Spec Ops should still be removed from each team and replaced with something more conventional imo :)
