You can turn it off whenever you want mate. Change the opacity in options
or if you want to go really hardcore :
bring down console and type
renderer.drawhud 0
to turn it all off, change variable to 1 to turn it back on.
Let's see how lonely you feel after you've got yourself into a squad that isn't using voip because they can afford the game and the pc to play it on, but not a £1-5 microphoneand you lose your way on the map!

Yes - I already voted yes for minimap removal, and I'm willing to test it.
I'll turn it off in the options when I'm playing tonight.

Err no, In real life soldiers have maps. The friendlys showing up on the map are those being relaid from signals.

But they don't run around with that map open and in their hands all the time.
That would be the "M" map.

Yeap have had it off (well 95% transparent) for a while now...
The only annoying bits are
1) your 'M' map goes transparent too, so you need to use CAPSLOCK to look at the map, slight inconvienience
2) names of players inside vehicle disappear
3) names of CPs disappear
other than that, welcome to wonderful world of beautiful graphics without the hideous thing in the corner of your screen!

I would prefer to keep the mini map but only show your squad members on it, "spotted" enemies and just the squad leaders of your team, as the "grunts" should be working around thier SL. That way you can still know where the hell your going, but also depend more on the chain of command communication to know where / direction the rest of your team is attacking from. So when you hear a engine charging down a side road or gun fire from some buildings or whatever, your teams level of communication will determine how well your decision of the next course of action will be.

I've played with the HUD off a couple of times!
Only problem is that you get no spawn map on, so you have to switch it back on.

Same here. Also, you are unable to change the firing mode on your weapon. I think there were other problems too but I can't remember atm. It sure does look nice though.

I trust that wherever the PR team goes with this one will be the best decision. If they needed a test then sure, I would gladly participate.
I didn't vote either way.

I just tried renderer.drawhud 0 for some time... if you could still use the map to spawn I would play without HUD happily

I play with it 99% invisible. For some reason BF2 won't let me set to 100%
You can still use the squad screen map with the minimap 100% off.

Ive had it at 95% for a while aswell.... its fairly second nature to hit caps lock now, especially while in vehicles.
I keep my minimap zoomed in all the way so I know where my squad mates are in close proximity, then caps lock for anything else

Dont use the rederer.drawhud 0. That makes it unplayable.
Instead, go to Options. On your right is a bunch of slider bars, crank those up to 100% or near 100%. There you go, now you have No HUD and still playable.

Will try that.

Am I the only person that has always used the caoslock sceen to look at the map instead of the M map? Capslock is so much easier to press during a game than M.

My vote is YES NO
YES minimap for Pilots and Drivers (Meaning if in a humvee, those who have minimap will be seat 1 and 2 [driver and gunner], another example if those in a blackhawk only seat 1, 2, and 3 will have minimap [ pilot, 2 gunners] You get the point)
NO minimap for infantry or passengers (people in humvee seat 3,4, 5, so on...)
