Counter-Sniper action

hello everyone

I'm new to PR since 0.5 but I've been playing quite extensively and I really like this mod, great job Devs!

The one thing that does bother me quite a bit is the way snipers don't have an incentive to work like their real-life counterparts, i.e. they fire happily away at anything that crosses their sights.

As I understand it, snipers have to be really choosy about their targets because their positions are easily revealed when they shoot. On top of that the aiming part isn't as easy as holding your crosshair on the target because of distance variations, wind etc.

Anyway, I get killed by snipers a lot, repeatedly, but when I play a sniper myself I find it laughably easy to get a lot of kills, usually staying in 1 spot for a long time.

I'm not suggesting getting rid of snipers! But they should have to be more careful and deliberate in their actions, maybe doing more spotting than actual shooting. A way of doing this could be to give players within a certain radius of a snipers victim a "hint" on where the shot came from... after 2 or 3 shots these hints may become an actual position on the minimap (simulating the triangulation of the snipers position). This would at least force the sniper to keep moving and try to pick off lone wolves while evading bigger squads.

There may be more elegant solutions to this dilemma, but I'd really like something done about it. What do other people think?

And I hope I'm not creating a double post here (I did run a search first).

No. If you get killed by the same sniper 2 times in a row from the same position you fail at life and please uninstall. Seriously.

I stay in some spots for a long time yes, but that's because I'm smart about it and the shots I'm making are 250m+ in range so there isn't much worry of getting flanked. If you aren't good enough to pull those off on a moving target, then please give up the rifle to someone who is or be smart enough to relocate.

all i do in al basra as insurgent is to locate and neutralize snipers.

once i hear the echo of the m95 or the m24, i use my sense of judgement and excellent sound card, tolocate them to within a few feet and knife them

I think they should make it so that when you get killed with the sniper kit you can't request another one during that round, that would make snipers really careful with choosing their vantage points and such suff.

I don't like the idea. I'd prefer the game not be tailored to protect the people who can't pay attention to their own surroundings. I agree that there is a problem when I can get up to a very high/visible point and waste all my ammo racking up tons of kills with ease but that's a problem with players and not the game.

that's rather rude. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but politeness isn't optional.

and you're missing my point. Of course if I were the only one to get sniped over and over I'd come to the conclusion it's my fault and try to improve my game (which I try to do anyway), but I'm not. Besides: I (as an *inexperienced* sniper) can just stay on some rooftop and snipe 10 opponents in a row before they find out where I am, I've managed this more than once.

*Please* don't say: those players should also uninstall. Besides being unconstructive it would also be plain wrong. Of course there are excellent players which might be really good at spotting snipers and keeping safe from them, but the game balance here certainly isn't perfect.

the solution is this: WEAR HEADPHONES! they really work! whenever i hear the crack of an american sniper on albasrah i hunt him down and knife him. it only takes two shots to find exactly whre he is, sometimes only one. not only can i hear if he fromt, back, left, or right, but i can also hear if he is up or down. just listen where the sounds are coming from. Make sure EAX is enabled as it really helps with 3D sounds. hope this helps with your 'dilemma' 8-)

Yeah, some good points made here and well.. some not so great stuff. Mr.Pin we (well I dont actually do the content) want to make this mod realistic. It is not realistic that "unvisible teammates" spot enemy snipers for you. Sure the sniping is not perfectly done but then if we start to crank about that we lose the point.

<joke>
Oh, lets just give them a red tracksuit and make their heads x6 they are now?

I've been told that many times, and heres why I'm rude.

Because if I'm all polite and nice, idiots wont pay attention to my post. So 2 post later the same stupid issue comes up and I have to reply to that AGAIN or risk some stupid rumors/ideas spreading. Instead, doing it this way, I have a much greater chance of someone actually reading what I write and learning from it, which is the only thing I can hope for.

Snipers are piss easy to get to. They're always in the same position in every round, and match.
Here a shot from the left? He's either in that building or the other.

I had my freaky encounter today.
Basrah, M95 and South VCP facing Facility. Took out 30 guys before they spotted me.
I had two bullets left, I hear someone behind me, I turn around and some bloke's there with a knife. I shoot him.
A second one comes up, I shoot him to. Switch to pistol and slide down the ladder. But get shot by another one.
The guy who shot me takes my kit.

I respawn, run to where i was shot, and shoot the ******* to get my "precious" back.

Shot some more.

Sniping is wayyyy to easy in my opinion. I dont claim to be proficient with sniper rifles in real life or anything, but i would imagine that it would take more then 2 seconds to line up a shot for a target that is more then 100ft away. In real life you would have to take account for your stance, distance and bullet drop, wind, breathing. I know most of this is unchangable but why cant we get more scope drift for the snipers?
You shouldnt be able to get 30+ kills as a sniper before you die. This is the reason why at the start of the round you see half the people on the server request sniper (followed by marksmen when they dont get their sniper).

M95 has way more bullet drop than the m24. Thats a fact! (not Irl of course)

Thanks to those with constructive thoughts and ideas. It's nice to see I'm not the only one who dislikes the way snipers work at the moment.

Of course I'm not just shouting for them to get nerfed - that would be cheap. Suggestions on how to deal with them in their present state are also welcome (i.e. getting better sound hardware). The field is open for all kinds of ideas.

I advise against doing the simplistic equation: less realism = bad!
Although realism is the *main* goal of PR, gameplay balance should follow quite closely... just one example for this: a sniper moving quickly through bushes should be spotted by the swaying leaves, and firing from prone should kick up dust etc, however the game engine does not allow for this "realism" to be properly implemented --> this translates into an unrealistic advantage for the sniper. Hence you have to (subtly) balance this game-caused advantage and make being a successful sniper a *real* achievement you can be proud of.

2 out of 32 players, if you know the map they aren't a threat, if you work in a squad/team they aren't a threat.

It's not hard to deal with a sniper once his position has been made.. so many people just ignore it though and carry on regardless, which means more kills for the sniper.

Problem isn't the snipers.. it's stupid players.

On Al Basrah last night I took the M95 up to the top of the hotel with a BlackHawk. I ran out of ammo after 15 kills and I couldn't seem to get someone to pick me up off the roof. Unfortunately I think they'd realized where I was at that point, and had started shooting RPGs up at me. If I had ammo, I'll bet I could have defended myself.

You took out 30 guys with M95 and had two rounds left? Doesn't it have 20 rounds?

Hey man, there are about a million rednecks that can from a standing position drop you in less than a second at probably 150-200 yards with good scope, my old man is one of them. You think a man is hard to hit, try a little deer in the woods on the bound(think bunny hopping is bad, deer can clear a 7 foot fence)...even then, less than a second at about 100 yds (not 100% but its definitely a good chance). Hell I've seen guys drop sparrows out of the sky standing with .22 and its quick...its just one of those things that becomes second nature and doesn't take any time at all I guess (I'm not one of them). My Dad grew up shooting squirells on the run...little twitchy animals that are hard as hell to hit...10 years of that and you have some skill. So now imagine a real sniper, who is insanely talented and trained. When you pickup sniper kit, you get to be him. Carlos Hathcock dropped an officer on a bike at 1.4 miles away with .50 cal. in Vietnam. He also dropped 35 guys in one sitting at 100 yrds...trapped them behind a burm...anyone moves *bam* dead. Scope drift is real but really not an issue to a good sniper...plus it doesn't happen with a good rest. So now we have insane view distances coming...and we'll have realistic bullet drop (i hope) all should be good. Snipers are plain killers, one of the most highly trained men in the entire military...thats why people hate them :)

As for sniping being easy...sure is easy when guys are running around in the open acting like idiots :)
