Hello..

Is it possible that the GPMG could the Britsh Supporters weapon?
I mean ok , they have got the m249 too , but it would be way more fun with the old Gimpy

The Minimi is 5.56mm belt or magazine fed, used at section level for fire support.



The GPMG is 7.62mm belt fed and is used in a multitude of roles from section level to co-axial mounts on Fighting Vehicles.



Although appearing similar the weapons are classes apart.

Though they are, infact, currently using the M249, not the Minimi in PR.

GPMG Is being phased out for the Minimi though, Remember PR is set a few years in the future, by that time GPMGs should be all but gone.

The minimi is good, but the 5.56mm rounds limits its range considerably. In cities this is probaly not a problem (its light wieght and high capacity makes is very suitable), but at longer range and when you actualy want bullets to pass through walls, it sucks compared to the GPMG.
Not every war and battle is and will be fought at short range and in cities.


But due to the fact, the engine can only visualy portray 1 levle of recoil, a proper 7.62mm machine gun cannot be modeled realisticaly - fired when stnading = bad idea for accuracy but iron site recoil can only LOOK the same for both standing and lying prone.

I know the pKM fires a similar 7. ** mm round, but really it aint all that realistic.

AND how do you get the BF2 engine to model an ammo belt (most man portable 7.62mm machines guns uses belts of ammo rather than boxes or mags).
I know you could just ignor this fact, and PR shoudl and probaly will ahve to, with a belt of ammo that never changes, even when all is fired.

Anyway, how could any squad leader turn down a weapon with the power of the m14, but can fire full autmaticaly for long periods, How, long range supressing fire at its most effective and portable!

No one would run around with the GPMG anyways, so it's a moot point. The minime was introduced for when the GPMG isn't practical, they both remain in service alongside each other though with the minime being an individual's weapon and the GPMG being assigned to a dedicated Machinegun Platoon, not a regular Platoon.

So unless you want one gun between three men, it's kinda pointless talking about the GPMG.

Because it uses 7.62 and not 5.56. We are a sucker for NATO rules.

make the gpmg a pick up kit in some maps i think.. Last time they tried to fase it out the soldiers got pissed of and got it back.
maybe have it like the m95 where you can only shoot it from a prone position

7.62x51 is also NATO round btw...

yes , seriously , make GPMG a pick up kit with unability to fire unless you're prone ..

Yes, but NATO have decided that 7.62 is no longer supposed too be used in an infantry platoon anymore. If i remember correctly, don't quote me on this. The UK forces got an extension due too not finding an suitable replaced for the GPMG.

GPMG could work in PR if it had all the following:

- 8 man squads required for large number of support players (indirect or direct support of GPMG).
- Squad system that determined the squads job e.g. create new **(squad type e.g pilot, assult, support, amrour) ** squad = pilot squad you could only get pilot kits/ Support squad (job to defend and put down heavy ammouts of suppressing fire) = 1 7.62mm machine is allowed and other heavy weapons, e.g snipers.
- Ammunition meansured in actual bullets and mags (done precisely), therefore through a type of kit or special kit selction, 7.62mm ammo belts could be carried by anothe player, thse then simiple droped or given to the GPMG.
- Proper recoil and movement system (advanced animation ext.), thus allowing accurate portrayal of a player carrying a heavy machine gun.


All totaly impossible using hte BF2 engine, but this shows some of areas that would be needed for the GPMG to be portrayed and used. But IF all of the above could be done, trust me, it would be so much fun.

I suspect with the emerging adoption of Designated marksmen in the US military (and so they'll probubly turn up in the rest of NATO pretty soon) that decision will be recinded.
