ambient war sounds?

im not really sure if this is already in PR, but i dont think so because i never hear them. but anyway what im suggesting is ambient war sounds, like gunfire, mortar rounds, misc explosions, the crackle of AKs in the distance etc. is it already there and im just not hearing it? and what i think would be the coolest of all, say in a map like basrah or any middle east map with a city, would be the muslim call to prayer that is played from the loudspeakers from the mosques. its so loud it can be heard all over the city and they do this in every muslim country. ive watched iraq combat videos of marines fighting insurgents and you can hear the call to prayer in the background. the insurgents even use the loudspeakers to inform other insurgents that americans are in the area. i think it would add a really cool touch of realism to a map.
and is it at all possible to centralize a sound liek that? say to like a city area or within a certain range of a mosque? it would be kinda dumb to hear it all the way at the airport in basrah.

The call to prayer idea won't happen, it will spark off too much controversy. As for ambient sounds, are the sounds of A10's and 50.cals not enough for you?

I'm just saying that a war ambiance track wouldn't suit PR in my opinion. PR and online gaming in general is such a good experience because it's all unscripted, adding in scripted gunfire and explosions would just feel wrong.
That said, volumes are being boosted and tweaked etc....just wait

you really think the call to prayer idea will cause controversy? i thought that the fact that you can be a marine and get blown up by an IED in the game would be much more controversial than a sound effect that is fitting for a middle eastern enviroment. oh well....

Day of Defeat for HL1 used to have this...so did Firearms mod. Seemed pretty cool, though it made no sense generally.

It can be heard throughout the whole city because there are speakers on poles throughout the city.
Would you want to listen to that for 2 hour, every round?

Even though the game itself sucked, DoD source has the most awe-inspiring gunshot sounds from far away i've heard in any game. Players having a pitched fire-fight on the other side of the map sounded awsome.

Some other mods have used ambient war sounds to varying degrees of success. Personally it hasn't added much value to any of them and so I'm inclined to think that it would be too much trouble for the gains - and if done poorly it would only make things worse. It seems to me that at best they can be neutral, not really adding anything but not making it worse either. So quite simply not worth it.
The actual in-game sounds are enough. They give much more towards mood than any generic background noise as you know that they actually mean something.

Turn your sound to high. I did it and all of a sudden on Operation Phoenix I could hear birds and a church bell, but having the sound at low didn't let me hear these extra sounds.
That's just an example, there's plenty more.

It is possible to create internal sounds like the heart beat and add them to a script.
It's completely frivolous, but it would be choice to have the sound of small arms fire when you start going out of bounds. It seems better than just taking damage from nowhere.
Whatever happened to the dome of death? Same could be applied there except I never see it anymore.

I always thought the background sound of a small propeler airplane ( cessna?) flying over the battlefield on maps like fallujah and muttrah kinda akward.
just like, what the hell is that airplane doing? fleeing? overlooking?

In one of the map of GRAW 1 you could hear "Your diplomatically elected leader has requested our help, please stay inside... water and food will be brought in the next four hours" over speakers, it was really cool and immersive... I wish we could have something like that in urban maps...

yeah streets has ambient sounds, I really like it, makes it feel like you are really in hostile territory, streets is an awesome map and wish it could be expanded to a 64 sized conquest map with the same density of buildings / etc.

Ya Streets is nice. TONS of ambient sounds. Gives the feeling that your in the middle of a war ridden city. As if you're not the only part of the battle.
