The FAL is a rediculsly popular weapon. By far the most sucessful of the NATO battle rifles. So much so infact that it was nicknamed "The right arm of the free world". Finding it in the hands of insurgents or paramilitaries would not be uncommon in many parts of the world. Also, in the past decade or two the vast majority of FAL users have dumped them in favour of newer weapons (Britian with the L85, Belgium with the FNC, Australians with the F88, etc, etc...) so there are even more floating about the worlds arms markets than before.

Also, the M16A1 could go on that list as well, as older versions of the M16 are also fairly common weapons around the world. Then again niether come close the the AK-47/AKM in the total produced.

I've heared a statement that AKM was #1 in 70s , but the king of 80s definitely was FAL

Bob, it was more of a "do you have any proof that these weapons are used?, photos?, movies?" than a "do you have proof that the FAL COULD be used?"

Give them to the militia, would make sense.

FN FAL do not need any proof to be used by insurgents & militia , it is third most spread all over the world firearm , after AK & M16 family

The insurgents use whatever they can get their hands on. I've seen photos of captured caches that had UMPs, AUGs, and P90s!

A google search will pull up a lot of information on the FAL, though most of it is articles rather than facts imo. One common trend appears to be it's more common amongst African states than Middle Eastern ones. So depends on the setting really.

Aye, look up pictures of fals in conflicts and they are usually seen in African conflicts, one that springs to mind is Somalia.

The FAL is extremely common in Africa, as others have mentioned. Not so much in the ME, but anything is possible. There were a few vids of Al-Sarkhawi (sp?) before we blew up his sorry *** showing him firing a SAW and giving interviews showing M16s in the background, so anything is possible.

I have seen news pictures of Palestinian militants carrying FALs.
