I think I have GSD

I was at the doctor's office (also known as the DVB server) yesterday, and after close examination, Doc says I got GSD.
GSD = Good Squadleader Deficit
Yup, I SUCK AT BEING SL! Maybe because I have had alot of really good, teamwork-oriented, VOIP-using sl's. Maybe I'm just a natural born follower (in-game at least). Either way, I know that if I ever want to really enjoy my PR experience, I'm gonna have to be a semi-competent SL.
Any help guys..........please?

Therapy, so that you finally accept your fate. Or just hang around long enough to you find a squad that sucks so bad, anything would make it look better.

Join a squad with a bunch of guys with the same tag. learn from their squadleader.
I personally don't really like being the squad leader, but I am a good one. Mainly only try squadleader as a tank commander or bradley....
Basically just watch others.

Good SL are made not born, go fourth and be forged in the heat of battle! Uhm I could be wrong though in which case just keep leaving the squad and re-join until someone finally takes over (usually this is how I end up being SL)

If you join a squad with a bunch of guys from a clan, chances are, you're not going to learn THAT much, because first of all, they're probably going to be using external comms (like vent or TS), and second of all, they know each other, and therefore the squad dynamics are different for them - the squadleader of a clan squad does not have to beat a bunch of strangers into submission.
Which brings me to my second point - sometimes people on a server are just incapable of working in a squad. Not much you can do if you can't find anyone who'll follow you. Yes, you can kick them, but if there's no replacement, kicking them is just futile. Many people in PR join squads just because they're expected to, even if they have no intention of following orders or anything.
Beyond that, it's the usual advice - listen to your squadmembers, don't bark orders at them like a drill sergeant. On the other hand, try to keep track of them, and if they're wandering off somewhere, talk to them directly. Tell them what you want to do and what you need them to do it achieve it. If all else fails, bring a bag of squadmember snacks along and reward them for good behavior.

I can deal with all the technical stuff (setting RPs, kicking/inviting members etc), I guess I lack the intuition and know-how of a marginally acceptable SL (For ex: I once led my squad literally RIGHT IN FRONT of an armor column on Ejod). It gets frustrating and kinda embarrassing having to ask if anyoone else wants to be SL

Ye,as a Sl you have to keep up a good combat awareness.
Don't worry too much about shooting stuff, thatss what you have your Members for. Your goal is to know where all your guys are exactly and where roughly the enemy is.You have to tell your guys where to go and what to do to be an efficient squad, because they are to busy shooting stuff to think about that(usually). For this, a good contact to the commander is essential.

Try and think of it from an RTS point of view and less from an FPS point of view.
DO NOT take point !
Always assign a point man and tell him to spot before shooting.
( caveat: tell if if enemy is 30m or less don't use comm rose radio )
Use the Caplok map a lot and use the "n" key alot based on what hear on the radio.
ie: you are all zoomed in on City, al Jabal and you hear " enemy armor spotted ", just a quick poke at the "n" key tells you if you should give a sh t or not.
But as far as commands go...
If you tell people where to go, but not how to get there, you'll be amazed at the results.
George S. Patton
and even more important ....................
A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week.
George S. Patton
don't get hung up on complex tactics, simply BoB fire and flank will do the trick in most cases.
BUT...BUT, look at that big map before you make an attack.
Is there another squad or even just one or two guys ( blue ) headed toward your objective ?
If so, let them be the diversion for your flankers, so they can push up more before you start suppressive fire.
Now when your flankers engage the enemy is being fired on from 3 directions.
Basically just keep looking at that big map and thinking ....what's the dumbest thing the guy with APC could do ?............and what do I do if he does that ?
That thought process has kept me accident free for 20+ of driving in NY/NJ traffic and it's the kind awareness that you teach yourself.

)

Alot of experience of the game in general is the best way in becoming a good SL.
Once you know the knooks and crannies of the game, you will know what to do to help the team with your squad, what classes people should have etc etc

I'm totally a supportive player. I could never lead a Squad. I spend too much time dead so my squad would never spawn near the front lines unless someone rolled an APC up.
Besides, I'm more useful with a Wrench or Medic Pack in my hands.

Hey, as an SL, you often get to yell at people to get a medic pack in their hands... and then you gotta keep yelling at them so that they don't request a marksman kit instead.

I know what you mean OP about leading a squad.
For me it usually happens this way.., Got every thing working ok, good comms, good humour... things go swimmingly for 20 mins or so. Then i get carried away and try to move too soon and ultimately lead my full squad to certain death
I guess ingame i enjoy following more than leading anyway, the support role really gives me a good buzz when the whole squad is working together. Im usually best at medic or rifleman. Its too much for me to think about ( a excellent testament to the mod ) been a squad leader, the game kind of gets bogged down for me then.

@ Manic: I agree with you 100%. I'd much rather be healing and resupplying my squadmates rather than decide the best approach to an enemy outpost, which, if done wrong, could lead our team to certain failure. To put it blatantly, I'm not much of a thinker
Just got back from an awesome couple of rounds on TG. I didn't go SL once, but I did learn alot as to what you should want out of your squad pertaining to movement, attacking/counter-attacking, maneuvering etc (thx King Kong). I have a feeling that being a SL isn't that hard, I just gotta stop wrapping my mind around little details (which honestly make the game fun for me), and not be so self-conscious as to what happens to my guys.
(Sigh) I feel like I'm on Dr. Phil or something...

Some people are born to lead, some are born to follow. You just appear to be a follower.
Nothing wrong with that at all. Because without the followers, the leaders would have no one to lead.
