[Question] Basing a map on real life?

So, PR wants their maps to based on something 'real life' related. Like an actual place. I'm not planning on making a map for PR yet, not even thinking about it. But when I do I want it to be the best I can make it.

So, how do you guys who have based maps on real places go about it? I have a map, both road map and sattelite (very detailed) of an area. But is there anywhere I can find out how to make everything as close to scale as possible?

Seeing as we can now create 17sqKM maps (something i will eventually encounter, im sure), I want to take advantage when I get to it.

I noticed in Rhinos previews of muttrah, he has a template almost, of the roads he expects to work on. Almost like he copied and pasted a road map on the terrain to work over. Can someone point me in the general direction of where I can learn about that method? I imagine it would help with creating a map to scale.

Also, one LAST question. 17kmsq maps are maps that are size-1024 and scale-4 correct?

Thanks for reading all that :D

I wouldn't think about that stuff yet :p

what you do thou is you use BF2Tpaint to split your image you have taken into sections, then put it into the editor files thou I would try and learn more about how the BF2 maps, and the editor works before doing it.

and ye, 4km x 4km maps are 1024 x 4 maps but dont attempt one yet, they need extra bits of code etc to work.
