Bipods for machineguns and sniper rifles

Following fruitful discussion here: http://realitymod.com/forum/showthread. ... 0#poststop , I decided to post this as a suggestion:
Fishw0rk wrote:For bipods I had an idea ages ago, but I think the devs said it would be difficult (or impossible, heh) to implement. Basically we could get a second LMG slot that allowed the gun to be used *only* from the prone position to simulate bipod support (like the code we have on the .50cal snipers right now). When the LMG is used from this slot it would have little to no recoil or deviation and since it could only be used in the prone position it wouldnt be exploited from while standing/crouching. I'd imagine this LMG would fit in the "3" slot and the normal LMG would still be binded to the "2" slot.

The biggest issue the devs were facing was finding a way to have both these guns share the same ammo. I know it was possible in BF1942, as the FH guys managed to do it with the BAR and German FG42. However I dunno if BF2 can still be moded in this way.

This could also be applied to other guns with bipods as well (i.e. sniper rifles) if it works.
I really like that, Fishwork. When the trailer for BF2 came out I was very excited because it looked like you were able to mount guns on stuff like in Day of Defeat. I have always wanted deployable bipods.

There is a problem with your idea, however. At least I imagine there is because I do not think you would be able to prevent the player from turning. So, you would basically have a bipod deployed MG that is not attached to anything, letting you turn it 360 degrees. However, I do not think this is a major problem compared to the fact that MG's would be more useful and realistic - being able to set up machinegun nests would be so cool.

My idea for 'giving MG's bipods' - a way to make them better without having to create scopes with all-new artwork and so on, just minimal changes - would be to let them be like now, only instead of maxing out at the current accuracy they would keep getting better. They would never become as accurate as the real mounted guns - that does not seem right - but still considerably more accurate than they currently are. Naturally, the best implementation would be that they gained the accuracy like we have now followed by a pause of a few seconds where they did not gain additional accuracy (to symbolize installing the weapon) followed by a large boost in accuracy when weapon was set up. However, I doubt it is possible for BF2 weapons to gain accuracy in several 'stages' like that so it is the best possible compromise. To me, it would also be ok if MG's gained accuracy slightly slower than currently as a tradeoff for being able to 'deploy bipods'.

Deploying bipods would work for all stances, not just while prone. This would let you setup a solid MG position even in bunkers where you cannot go prone (as is realistic). Naturally, the neglible problem with my solution is the same as with yours: 360 degree view. But with my idea you do not get the ammo issue.

we had bipods a long time ago, but they had some serious flaws. may have found a way round those flaws tho. something we'll look at in the future.

You mean, actual Bipods! that you could deploy in combat?!! Which would increase accuracy or decrease recoil!?!

Oh-ho! Not quite so angsty now Eggman's mentioned it may be possible, ey? :P

Openable/closeable bipods *would* carry the benefit of stopping LMG gunners from running-and-gunning Rambo-style too easily :)

Well, if it is possible you should use Fishwork's implementation, not mine. His is definitely preferable.

What about doing te same with the PKM what you did to te M95.

Prone to Shoot?

No good, that limits the weapon way too much. You need to be fire out bunker windows, for example.

Thats what you got LMGs for. Maybe an RPK, aye?

I comment about this in the other thread already. Basically a work around would be as mentioned but more specific would be a good delay for the "set-up" time, 10 sec +. Enough time that if you stand around in the open to get accurate fire going your dead. But if you have patience and don't move to much you could work the SAW from a window or sand bags etc.

I think it would help in making the SAW better at supression. If you have more options and locations to put down supressive fire you might be more likely to do so
