Engineers - ability to build certain structures ...

Someone in another thread suggested that SL's should be able to build stuff, but I disagree. Why should SL's have to be going around building stuff. It would be better for them to hang back and stay alive.
No, I think ENGINEERS should be able to build stuff.
The engineer would have a new "weapon" lets say weapon 8 or something. It would be the "place an object to build" weapon. It could have 3 fire modes which correspond to 3 different types of objects (sandbags, razorwire, etc). When fired it would create the wreck of the object on the ground, and then the engineer would use his shovel to build the object.
This objects weapon would have a limited amount of ammo for whatever people think is a reasonable amount of stuff for an engineer to build in a lifetime.
If necessary for PR's gameplay goals, maybe you could make the objects disappear as soon as they are dropped if the engineer is not within 100 meters of his SL?
Just an idea that I think makes more sense than having SL's build stuff.

Yes it make mor sense.
But whats if on a 64 Server 30 guys build sandbags, etc. This map would look like a sandbox map. Unable to play the map anymore.

This idea could work as well instead of the SL building things. I think it should be limited to sandbags, maybe include barb wire but no more.
The one thing I see with this is that in theory you could have upwards of 20+ engys on a team, two teams = 40+ engys on a server who could all build sandbags at once. Would this create lag, crashes, other issues?? If it was squad leaders building obviously there is a much lower maximum per server of people building. I'm not saying that the 40+ scenario would ever happen but the fact remains it could or something close to that # in some instances.

Well make the construction ability linked to the SL like the RP generation and then you have to have teamwork.
If you have teamwork you are less likely to have sandbags and razor wire scattered across the map.
If you are able to get 20 people together to all go Eng and build, well then we can find out if it crashes but that seems unlikely and if possible there would a capped number of NCO supplied buildings to prevent it.
But...sandbags and razor wire would have to cost something then to prevent it from being dropped and destroyed over and over.
Thats why I love this game, the possibilities seem almost endless sometimes.

HellDuke wrote:I don't think it is needed or that it would change anything. The idea of the SL being able to "build" is better, because HE is the one that can authorize a build. Engineers don't go arround everywhere thinking "Hm.. What should i build next? Oh i know let's build a wall here. What for? How should i know, i just love building". The SL issues the order to build the wall or razor wire and the engineers if you so want can do it (with the wrench for a change).
i concur

There is enough building going on already imho.

Well there is VOIP for the SL to tell his squad members what he wants them to do.

Do you want medics to build aid stations to?
Do you want riflemen to build Ammo Stations too?
Do you want specops to build .... , I dunno what the spec ops would build.

Slam&M4 ammo factory?
Or generators to fill up his 1337 laser sight batteries

lol, I don't really want engy's to build stuff, I just think that if its a choice between SL's building stuff and engy's building stuff, then the engy's should build it.

I stand by my idea of SL's putting down sandbag walls for riflemen and engs to build.

It's something useful for engineers to do though. At the moment they have A mine which is hardly ever used it seems, C4 that would hardly take dirt off a mole hill and repairing tanks faster even though most of the time people won't let 3 people in a tank to do that anyway... that's about it.
I don't think building a couple of sandbag walls is gonna cause half the server to be engineer. Plus if it was SL controlled then Riflemen would end up doing it anyway instead of Engineers thus making them no more appealing then before.
On the subject of Engineers are there any plans to actually make that c4 more powerful? It seems a little weaker then I'd imagine it to be in real life and it's a bit of a joke how quickly you can repair bridges.

Could we atleast get the Engineer two packets of C4 again? They don't weight that much, do they?

Engineer wrote:Giving engineers possibility to do everything without 'building designation' is a bad idea.
Well my suggestion has a form of 'building designation' in that engy's would have to be in range of their SL to build.

I still think a squad leader should be able to place a foundation for sandbags, and that's it. Nothing fancy. Nothing glamorous.

Yeah that would be cool too.
