With the beast that battlefield 2 is (i know there are loads of rubbish thinsg about it) do you think there will ever be the possibility of 128 player on one server? is there currently any attemps at doing this?

Yes, there actually has been an attempt to have 128 players on one server but it crashed when they had 65 players on I think.
Part one
Part two
I also found a thread in a HL2 forum\Battlefield 2 section of having 255 players on one server. He wrote up a "how to" on how to do it. Is this what Cheesygoodness used too?

I would imagine it would lag really bad.

Changing Limits are easily.. The problem is, will the server hold. Till now anything above 64 crashed..

it looks like from testing its hard coded on the client and server sides to not allow for 128 servers, so there is a very slim chance we will see it.

Rhino, is there any chance you and the other devs could use your status to bug DICE to add it in a patch? Maybe create a petition together with the other mod teams?
An overwhelming number of players would sign a such petition.

I've heard that one before.

It would only be right if DICE/EA accommodated the community's wishes and removed some of the ***** hardcoding considering the huge popularity of BF2.

Would it be possible to run the mod off the demo?

I thought I heard someone managed an 85 player game, but I guess it was just a rumor?

Part of the problem I see with this is that the game was released in 2005. The minimum specs are then based on systems from that era. EA/Dice would have to do a bunch of testing and optimizing to get the player limits up and still make the game playable based on their minimum specs. This player increase would have to be done through a patch which would impact the whole BF2 community so if it only worked for people with decent rigs and higher end servers the whole community would not benefit and start bitching to EA about it. I don't see EA creating all this work for them selves while not generating more revenue. People who already bought the game are the ones petitioning and hence not going to re-buy the game. No more money from a good deal of work and potential headaches = no deal unfortunately

It would be good for their reputation, though. EA is not exactly popular. If they went through with this it would be really hard to justify criticizing them.
Also, maybe they could just release the patch as 'unsupported' or simply release the parts of the source code that would enable modders to create a such 'patch' themselves.

This is most likely hardcoded in the native net code of the engine. I really doubt a mod could address this issue/feature. But having 128 player games would be awesome. Maybe a more reasonable limit to start with could be a good idea. Like 96 players.

Possible? Well, technically anything is possible.
However, this is not a top priority for the team at the moment. In order to accomplish 128-player servers there would have to be a lot of long tedious hours of work that would probably never come to any completed product.
In other words, its a shit ton of work to do right, and it would be in violation of the EULA for the game, as reverse engineering or decompiling the main executables is a rather big no-no.

Pal, mods have been petitioning Dice since the dawn of BF2 for more support, and less hardcoding....they gave us the "F*Ck off" attitude then, when they still had a shred of humanity left in them....
....And now they are controlled by EA....

I don't think they did that.
