New Player Training Idea.

I hate the term "noob". It has almost reached the same level as "smacktard".
I've seen new players to PR that are quite accomplished BF2, but just don't know all the in's and out's. I've been on servers where they are treated with little or no respect just because they ask how or where to request a kit. Now I know what you going to say RTFM! While I agree with that there is still much value in somebody showing you around so to speak.
So I had an idea. Are there any server admins who would be willing to lock their servers for an hour or two for training sessions? I am a fair PR player and would be willing, as I'm sure others would, to show new PR players how things work. This would have a couple of benefits community wide.
First, we would get better new players. They would not leave and delete their copy of PR becaused they got flamed for forgetting to wait until the chopper spooled up all the way and killed everyone onboard. Being a new player is intimidating I'm sure because we as long time players can be a little eliteist at times.
Second, this would bring people back to your servers when they are open to the public! It's always good to have servers with a fair amount of people on them.
If you are a server admin and would be willing to donate the server time (just an hour or so) or your are a veteran PR player and have the patience to train new players PM me and we'll get the ball rolling.
I'm definately putting my name down as a trainer!
I hope you all find this idea appealing...if not I'm ready for you!!!

You think that people who are too lazy too look up the answers to their questions in the manual would make an effort to go and join a training server?

Yeah, better to put the '60 sec manual' into the server message

I consider the idea itself is not really bad but it would not work from what I think.
The main problem is to single-out the new players and have them come to the right server at the right time. Anyone who would try to join a special training session would need much more discipline and will to learn than required for having them simply read through the important parts of the manual.
Even if you get this whole thing working there will be a vast majority of new players who do not want to do this special training but simply jump in and play. The problem here is mainly the attitude of the experienced PR players. While quite a bunch of them try and be helpful and offer advice there are also lots who are annoyed by all those guys not even trying to learn a few basics before joining a server. From these veterans you will then not hear any productive or encouraging statement.
I don't see a way to address all the problems in an adequate way so I try to do the best I can think of and write the manual as good as possible and thus hope to help the people that are willing enough to learn at all. I feel that people that are too resistant to learning a few things are not likely to end up as part of the desired player-base for Project Reality.

Hi there!
I think this is a really good idea, and I could offer you our 64 Slot "Ti_GERCAGE18+ #2 -=PR v0.6=-" Server at IP: 84.244.189.22 : 16567
Its located in Germany and hosted by I3D, so I think its more suitable for players from around Europe. We have a 40 slot TS Server, too.
I would consider myself a medium experienced PR player, mostly as SL, and I would happily share my "knowledge" with others. So, if you like, PM me!
You can also contact me via
http://www.tigercage.de (we are currently working on the page - and its mostly in german)
Cheers!

Last night on Thors Brigade Server someone created a Squad named "PR Noob Training", I personally think this is a great way to show the newbies how PR works.
Of course there's not a volunteer trainer on every server/team out there and sadly not every newbie will get a slot in a squad like this.
But more experienced players should think about doing this, in order to improve the game expereince for all players.

thanks for the offer...and i do have a partial solution in the works...
im starting work on a training map or 2 with the idea of having them run on dedicated 24/7 servers so they will be available all the time to everyone for training purposes...tank/heli/guns etc...
NOW...if anyone has a low volume server they would like to donate...id be more than happy to use it...
dont want to go into too much detail right now..but just give me a few weeks..

Aside from RTFM it takes aboot the same amount of keystrokes to abuse someone as it does to answer them so the easy answer is just answer the basics in the game.
Now if the person has a long laundry list of question I think it is appropriate after telling them what the shovel is for, how to get a kit and why they need to leave the turret to tell them to RTFM.

Well, I'm quite sure my clan is not willing to put it as 24/7, but I thought I read something in another thread here, that someone wanted to donate a server, if someone else puts it up. Maybe that one could be used as a training server.

If they don't that's fine. They are not the type of players we are looking for anyway.
I know that when I introduced PR to my clan members we went to an empty server to give them a quick run down. Which was much easier there then in the thick of battle.

I'm not going to single out players. I'm talking about the ones who are new and come to the forums and find out that there is training available. If they have the discipline to show up at an appointed time it's a good sign because that would show that they know how to follow orders.
Even if you get this whole thing working there will be a vast majority of new players who do not want to do this special training but simply jump in and play.
And they won't last.

Exactly my point! If we find a good core group of individuals who ARE willing to help then that would increase the enjoyment factor for the VETERANS who get annoyed and think they are above giving useful advice.
I don't see a way to address all the problems in an adequate way so I try to do the best I can think of and write the manual as good as possible and thus hope to help the people that are willing enough to learn at all. I agree the manual is quite good! I especially like the "Project Reality Essentials" .PDF version! It's very user friendly not like reading stereo instuctions.
As I played last night on Kashan Desert with a guy who "glanced" over the manual. He kept dying when he would try and take off. I asked if he got a pilot kit. He told me yes. "Hmmmm are you picking up the kit before you get into the plane?" "OH I thought when it said ""I have issued your pilot kit"" I already had it"
Just little things like that makes it more enjoyable for everyone. I think players would respond better to it IMHO.

I like this idea
if the time and server was posted on the forums I'd go to the training...
(not as a trainer...as a noob

I completely agree. Lots of questions can be best answered by RTFM.

Not looking for a 24/7 training server. Just an hour or two a week to get started.

I know that the manual has tons of information. I read the manual for lots of things...doesn't mean it was all crystal clear to me when I was done. It seems pretty clear to us the veteran players because we know what the manual is talking about. As a brand new PR player would it still be a clear?

Reading the guide is good to get the basics, but once the bullets start flying most of it gets thrown out the window,
A training session for an hour or two would teach people the basics and what it's like on a regular server
