Rear Area Tank Repair Station

What if we made it to where tanks had to return to base for repairs instead of using the ol' magic wrench to fix her up? Same way helis get repaired...drive into the repair "zone" and ya start repairing. Simulates the act of returning to base and having maintenance crews make repairs.

If a tank is tracked let the crewman/engineers use the magic wrench to get the track fixed but no further repairs can be made beyond that. Anything more requires a RTB.

It would force tanks to play it much more safe instead of the "move foward without abandon because i can take multiple AT hits and repair behind this hill" strategy i'm seeing right now.

helis are fast and can rtb much faster in turn.

In EJOD not being able to repair would likely result in suicide missions as

"i'm sure as hell not driving back and then into the action as bombers attack me"

however, the presence of a "garage" would be great, but i think falling back in a slow slow tank would be just unfun, what if field repairs (with spanners) were twice as slow and the garage was their as an option?

I think the engineer repair is a little too fast, or is that a reward for the teamwork of keeping an engiee or 2 local?

Or, and i'm smelling hardcoded here, if tanks could only be repaired to 50% with field repairs? (and fix tracks and turret) but for a full health tank you gotta take it home (or never let it get hit).

-Make the garage a commander asset.

I like the idea of having field garages and such if they're plausible from a reality point of view, also it'd be nice if the engineer could only repair vehicles a certain amount after been hit as heli mentioned.

It would be pretty awesome if there was a way of having different supply drops for different uses, Infantry supplies had ammo, Mechanised supplies had repair resources etc, you could split the kinds of ammo too if BF2 wasn't such a $%^& which has already been discussed. If there was some way of making it so you could only do proper repairs around some sort of supply drop ala commander having to build near his vehicle that'd be cool and a bit more realistic (but probably not at all realistic, can't imagine you can ask a ranking officer to request a air dropped tank exhaust :p ).

I'm sure the hardcoded nature of BF2 will ruin any scope for anything more complex though...

Repair bases at certain flags on bigger maps maybe?

that could work.

But I kind of like the wrench repair thing. If you have an engineer with you you can get your vehicle fixed pretty fast. But if not then you are going to be sitting there for like 2 minutes looking at your tank without any real cover. So if you don't have an engineer it's best to fall back a little.

This promotes teamwork since if you do get an engineer to repair your tank you are going to have quite a big advantage.

It's good that you have 3 man tank crews every now and again but it seems a little stupid that you can repair a tank to that extent with no supplies whatsoever. Putting out a fire and stuff like that's reasonable but anything beyond anything minors pretty ridiculous.

True, which is all well and good. But we are all missing one important fact here. In bf2, unlike reality, tanks have a health point system, instead of an armour penetration system....

-Take the wrench away from the crewman, that way he'd have to rely on an engineer.

*I'm just full of great ideas today, aren't I? :D *

Your right but there's stuff that can be done to make the most of a bad situation (I'd hope).

I'm all for a commander asset: Repair garage....maybe(i'd rather not) still allow the wrench to repair but make it take WAY longer. Magic wrenches mess up the gameplay a little...make tanks too strong. So like a LAT guy, he hits a tank...the tank runs off for 10 secs...repairs quickly and then is back. I'd rather KNOW that I've hurt him a little with my LAT instead of just annoyed him.

I've suggestion this before and it wasn't greeted very well...
Let's hope peoples minds have changed..

Light AT does shit against tanks, so stop using it against tanks. Its only effective against jeeps and APCs ffs...

Well, dont want to waste tickets on another commander asset, so why not have the bunker spawn a supply truck besides the Humvee?

I've always wondered repair bays were removed in BF2. BF1942 had them.

Most incoherent post I've ever seen (with the exception of stuff on 1337.com and 4chan..)

I think we have some great ideas here.
i tottally agree with either make the repairtime longer or have them fall to base.

Maybe its not that fun for a tank but there should be some downside for using armor. I vote for tanks having to fall back to certain bases to repair.

They had repair stations in desert combat 1942, i thought?

Perhaps we could do something along the lines of this:

You have a damaged vehicle, and an engineer starts repairing. How about making it so that engineers/people with a wrench (slowly), can only repair the vehicle to about say...80%? and then if the driver wants full repair, they have to drive back to the main and park the tank in an auto-repair bay (which also repairs faster, but only a little faster).

I think that is both realistic, and would encourage non-selfdestructiveness. Bc IRL, you can never completely repair a tank/car (assuming it has war damage) in the field, but at a main you could. Also, tanks a cars won't go suicidal, knowing that if their car gets really damaged they're screwed.

I think it should be more subjective then that. How you'd go about coding it so you could do certain repairs etc is beyond me but it'd be nice if there was some way of making it so only certain repairs were possible (but most likely won't be).
