Howdy guys!

I'm picking up my copy of BF2 tomorrow morning. After having read a lot about it and watched a few movies of it, I downloaded PRM tonight, planning to start playing it as soon as I get BF2 running tomorrow. However, seeing how this mod is rather... complicated, do you think I should play vBF2 for a month or so before I start playing PRM?

I've played lots of tactical shooters before, so I know how to play them, but I was thinking that it might be good to get used to the BF2 mechanics before I log on to a PRM server and make everyone go nuts because I don't know the game very well.

So what do you think? PRM right away or vBF2 for a month before I get started with the mod?

Edit: I'm new to those forums, so I'm not entirely sure that I posted this in the correct section. If I didn't, I apologize for that and would like an admin to either move this thread or lock it. Also, I tried using the search function to see if a question like mine had been posted before, but I couldn't find anything.

play BF2 for a couple of days, just to get used to the controls and general feel of it. However, don't play it for too long, or you may be warped into one of those team-killing, bunny-hopping, insta-proning, jet-crashing, lone-wolfing SOB's that play vBF2. I would recommend then starting a local server in PR and practicing in that before moving onto internet servers, but i'm not sure that the local server option is working in 0.6... doesn't for me...

yeah , you should play vbf2 first , get the basics after a week or until your comfortable. If you play regular bf2 first , you will fully appreciate the pr mod.. and see why most of us love it

to tell you the truth, its like night and day. how far this mod has taken bf2 is just crazy.

the only reason i would suggest playing bf2 is for greater appreciation of the mod. other than that, i would say youre good to go without it.

Play vBF2 first for a few days just to have some fun and to see the difference between the PR mod and vBF2. You wont be disappointed if you play vBF2 first.

Just play PR on your local server.

BF2v corrupted my fragile little mind.

But play PR first i highly suggest it.

And above all read the guide.

Just like most of you guys say, I think it would be better to play a little vBF2 first to get the feel for the game. I read about beginner training in some other section of the forum - is that something I could do or have you dumped the whole concept by now? I think it's a great idea and that new players, like myself, can learn a lot from it.

Also (a little OT, but I hope that you can forgive me for it ;) ), pressing the "Edit" button on my last post made an entirely new post instead of just editing the old one. How come?

What you can learn from vBF2 that will be useful in PR can pretty much be covered by listening to the help dialogs in singleplayer.
My recommendation is that you play vBF2 for a day, and listen to the help messages to get you started with the controls. After that, have a look at the PR Guide and then load up PR and feel the difference.

thats true, i forgot about the help messages. they may be useful -- i'd say play vbf2 if youve never played a battlefield game. i started on 1942 so i only remember the help things as being very very irritating.

BF2 itself may be fun only if you play with your friends . For lonewolf it is either 24\7 Karkand , or major dissapointment due to completely retarded teammates ( more dangerous then enemies , lol ) , lack of teamwork , grenade\claymore spam and overpowered guns ( some of the unlocks , some of the stock ones ) which are being abused all the time by noobs who think they are cool with them , vehicles raping you up to the end of every round and finally , KDR about 0.2-0.5 .

Still ( as I said ) it may be fun , if you play with at least one friend .
I'd agree with posters above that you should play BF2 for a week or less to learn basics , then switch to PR .

Id recommend playing PRs Single Player mod until you get the hang of how the dynamics work, then join up on a server. The manual that installed when you got the mod will help alot with the major changes.

Start up a single player, try everything so you get help messages for each thing, then play PR, and stay out of vBF2 multiplayer !

i bought bf2 after being an avid fan of the previous releases, played it twice hated the super arcade style, then only pulled it out again since a month ago. pr reduced that arcade to a more useful level. And now im glad i bought it.

The best way for someone new to get a feel for what to do... IMO, is to read the manual fully in wiki or DL it. then play single player pr as the mod is quiet different from vanilla.
Other than the help messages, i cant see why one would bother with vbf2. its such a different gameplay that it would almost teach bad habits straight off the cuff, whilst missing some of the other roles that need to be taught in pr

my 2 cents

YES.

You should play BF2 for a whole week - not just a day or two. Otherwise, you will not feel or get to see what PR gives us! All my friends I got into PR I made play BF2 first. They LOVVED BF2... then after a week they started whining about the 3 rockets to kill a cobra BS and easily accessible AT rockets. Then I gave them PR .5 - they fell in love. The rest is history.

coolhand, "Banned" user titles have been banned and you can get banned for real, if you do not change your "Banned" user title to something else.

Or is it allowed if you have a dot next to it? :|

Just skip BF2. Go straight to PR.

The disclaimer saying that this mod is hard to learn is more aimed at the regular BF2 guys. Once you get used to how BF2 works, thats when it gets hard to "unlearn". Just dive right in at PR. Type or just admit it on VOIP that you are new. If they are harsh or just plain smacktards, leave the squad. Join another.

Not sure where you are from, but just say where and what servers gives you the best ping and we will give you tips on what server to play on. Where you can be completely green and still get help.

I never bothered with BF2, I went straight to PR.

But if he starts off with BF2 it'll be a relatively easy learning and familiarisation style of gameplay. After two days vBF2 play, switching to PR will seem like a dream.
