I'm sick of only being able to see about 200-300 yards

Is your veiw distance all the way up?

Yes. Might be 400-500 yards, but that still ain't very far

No it is not but BF2 has that fog feature won't let anyone see far.

Yes, you can increase your view distance dramatically.

The problem is, your system will hog.

I'm running on:

3ghz P4
1gig DDR memory
ATI 9600 pro 256MB

I tried turning view distance to an incredible amount. When I did this, I could see the MEC main base from the US carrier on Gulf of Oman.

The problem is I was getting 4fps on the lowest settings :(

If you do this, you won't be able to play online because you will get kicked by PB or BF2 won't allow you to join.

Well, I really hate to refer to something like this, but there are a set of cheats out there, and no, I won't mention where, because cheaters ruin the game, but from screenies I've seen, it allows you to see forever and remove the fog. If people are playing "successfully" (I use that term loosely due to the fact they are cheating) without the fog, and with seemingly infinite view distances, why couldn't it really be increased?

I agree 100%. I don't even see the point in playing a multi player online game if you're not going to do it without cheating. It takes no skill to cheat.

It is awsome on 1942 because you have a huge view distance and i was picking people off with an M1-garand at the range that you use would use a sniper for on BF2because it is the only way to cut through that fog.

I've increased the view distance for singleplayer games, and it works alright. Example: Gulf of Oman standard view distance is 400. Increased it to 800. FRAPS still shows framerates in the 50s most times, so I still find it playable. But you have to be judicious in how far you increase the distance...

And since it won't work in multiplayer, it's of limited utility anyways.

but i take it it would work in multiplayer if you had it as part of a mod?

Obviously it would work: Its a map setting (besides the setting modifier of course).

But not everyone has the same computer. BF2 works fine for the people downloading the mod (obviously), I dont think you want to start alienating people with added system demands.

Personally, I run with my viewdistance to 70%, because running it on 100% it is starting to chug. Yes I push my computer, but I'm proud that my old 2400+ with a 9800 Pro and 1gb of assorted no-name **** ram is able to handle BF2 as good as it does.

Most likely down to the dense nature of the map. It's a city map with buildings and lots of things being renderd in a small space, so it needs all the extra power it can get. Also for some reason since patching to 1.03 my fog fade thing has been... odd. It's hard to describe, but it's not foggy any more, you just cant see things, or they're massively clear (generally the bulidings). I'll try and get a screenshot some time.

I turned my graphics to lowest and then turned up visability to 100% I think its a advantage having graphics at lowest settings it reduces graphics card lag by 50%. And acually I use fraps and I get better FPS running the Mod then acual BF2.

I still do play vinalla BF2 because my clan still plays. But I hope on PRMM quite abit. Its where I learn to fly the plane cause its not ranked and If I kill my teammates no one knows... :-D

Hi,
it's very easy to increase the visibility on a map to an almost-realistic scale, e.g. 1000 meters. It's not even a performance killer. Furthermore, if you design your mod with this in mind you can create lower-poly models, optimize LODs etc. My only concern here is the increased bandwidth demand on multiplayer games. Imagine a scenario where everyone sees everyone, e.g. a knife fight on a football field or a plain dogfight map. I think the BF2 engine couldn't handle this well and there would be much lag. This definitely needs testing. If possible, this is a must have for any realmod.

Personally I think the "reality" should be in realistic looking models, realistic sounds and realistic level design. Not realistic view distances.

You have to make a sacrifice somewhere. I dont find it acceptable that it should look like OFP just so one can have large maps.

Besides, I believe even PR will be based on BF2. Its not a complete from the ground up mod without any BF2 props, models, vehicles, sounds, etc, is it?
