I think the SVD enforces the SL to stay back for spawning and providing cover while the squad is attacking

To reinforce the intended malitia play style. Good long range firepower (SVDs, Nagants, to a lesser extent, SKSs) and good short range firepower (PPSh, Bizon, AK) but lacking mid range firepower (ie, a scoped assault rifle)

The only problem with it is that the sound is really distinct, which gives away your position quickly.

That could be said for any weapon.

Nah, not really. Hearing M16 fire doesn't tell you whether you're dealing with a SL or not.

Thats not what he means.

When you hear an SVD on Mestia you immediately know there's an SL around. When you hear an L85 it could be a rifleman, medic, light AT, engineer, AA, crewman, etc.

I've had a bunch of times where I was on the Brit side, busy assaulting one of the cps, and as soon as we heard the SVD, we went straight after the sound. If you're lucky, the SL doesn't move, but just keeps shooting from one place, which makes him really easy to hunt down.
