Who needs artillery? Give us bombers!

This has been suggested many times before, but it need a post all its I own I think.

Instead of having artillery on map, we can have mortars (as someone in a post below suggested).

Now, another possible option (which will take an extreme time.. maybe 1/3 of the round.. to reload) is the B-52.

As soon as the point is chosen, the plane would fly in from the side of the map and bomb... then keep flying to the other end.

I wonder what the limitations are for the BF2 engine to support something like that. Would be pretty cool if you could shoot it down too.

EDIT: Or maybe, since the B-52 is a little over the top for a mission... a round could start with a B-52 bombing in a random enemy spot. This would act as a bombardment before the US forces move in :)

I thought big bombers where pretty obsolute today. How about an F117 with smartbombs? :)

Artnez, buddy... Whatever you've been drinking hand it over right now!
A B-52, A single one at that will basically lay waste to damn near the entire map in one drop. Naaa, I want an EB-52 megafortress. All set to do Wild Weasel stuff as well as act as long range escort for fighter/bombers on missions deep behind enemy lines...

...Or keep the arty. Only, try to make it less of a scan and spam weapon. ;)

Dale Brown.... Anyone? ;)

I like that idea Artnez!! :D

i say nearly everything should be player controlled, arty, planes, bombers. i do think a B52 would be overkill on a map so maybe a smaller plane with bombs would so, also, as ive said many times: DOWN WITH COMMANDER ARTY!!

Up with commander mortar strikes!

I suggested that EXACT idea as you, Artnez, about the B-52, it would be a cool addition, but as has been posted already, in reality it would leave the entire map as wasteland...

As for commander-controlled mortar strikes, why not just have a mortar kit?

The reason I prefer mortar strikes instead of mortar kits is because it is impossible to create the effect of true mortar attacks.

First, they happen far away from the battle. We can rest assured that people will use them differently.

Second, there is no more spotting in BF2 (the engine does not have it built in). The spotting in BF1942 basically did this: You spot with binoculars (or similar) and when an artillery or mortar team presses secondary fire, they are switched to the view of the spot.

Third, mortar teams rely on coordinates and maps... both of which you can't accurately depict in the BF2 engine.

And Fourth, but not least, a mortar is a team of people, it cannot be simply one guy.

Sounds good but I don't think it would work in singleplayer with since EA an DICE haven't released an AI editor.

For your point about the co-ordinates, the Commander & Squad Leaders are able to mark the map with waypoints, objectives, etc - I'm no programmer/coder, but I was thinking maybe that could be adopted to aid with the function of mortars.

For your point about mortars being a team of people, it depends on the mortar;
The British Army use the 81mm Mortar, which granted - is a big bugger, and needs a team to work with, however the 51mm mortar can be used by one man:

i wasnt suggesting down with commander arty and up with giving him mortars, the effect is the same. i hate the commander as they are in bf2, theyre gods watching over the battlefield. thats not right. giving him mortars would be doing the same thing as letting him have his arty, which is annoying as hell. i was suggesting either a mortar emplacement or a kit.with VOIP i think that it just might work, it just needs to be tested out.

There are several things that could replace Commander artillery.

Mortars - Less power than artillery is currently but still devestating against infantry over an area.
Bomb Runs - Pretty cool idea.
Cruise Missile or Smart Bomb - Much like artillery is now, except a single shot is fired, which is dead-on accurate but takes 10-15 seconds or so from target time to impact, meaning it'll still have a level of inaccuracy. Would be excellent to pursuade against camping by groups of infantry on rooftops or tanks and such.
Rocket Artillery - Would actually fit better. Have like a single MLRS or BM-24 or Smerch or something, that fires a salvo of rockets, then reloads for awhile.
S'about it.

Ion cannons, and scuds, and nukes, oh my. :D

Interesting ideas. Mortars make sense for infantry-based maps.

Lol I was actually thinking about Ion cannons when I wrote that. I was like, "shit, it'd be effin cool for a C&C mod to make an ion cannon weapon that instantaneously delivers a massive amount of carnage and death". Ion cannons would actually work very very well inplace of Commander artillery, for a C&C mod....

...*runs off to look for a C&C mod!*

i think that we should have more A-bombs so that we can nuke more countries and especially the countries who oppose us

The big problem I could see with a B-52 is would the map be able to contain all the bombs. Mainly Mk. 82's and/or Mk. 84's. Then there could be JDAM's but how many? Or possibly use 250lb small diameter bombs, but that goes back to how many since their power is equal to about 500lb bomb.

That's a good point. The bombing run will be larger than the map (at least the line it follows). Maybe have "strategic" air strikes? Could be an F18 up high that can drop a Paveway or somthing that takes longer to "reload" than artillery but does more damage, seeing as those things are designed to break battlecruisers in two, and to destroy reinfoced bunkers.
