Spotting problem (with binoculars)

Sometimes it's hard or even impossible to spot targets from far away with binoculars. There is an example picture of this kind of situation. The spotter tries to spot a tank for his team mates...

...but the spotter shouts "infantry spotted!" (even when he can't see that hidden soldier). This has 3. annoying effects: 1. Your team mates don't get the location of the tank. 2. The hidden soldier will be exposed. 3. The tank probably crushes your team mates that have not noticed incoming tank.

I have met this problem several times. It happens more often in forests but it can happen on places where you have a clear vision (for example in deserts). EDIT: I think this problem is in the BF2 engine. But it would be nice, if this could be fixed some how.

Yeah, I do think this is a problem with the BF2 engine not being able to cope with the awesome PR view distances.

The best method is to get your binoculars out and press q and choose the right item and spot it that way.

Yeah, and sometimes your "spot" will hit the "big and old rock" resulting in a "enemy units on the move?" even though you've clearly aimed above the rock. I find this even more annoying, as you can't even select the tank from the list, because it will just hit the rock, and spot the tank in an incorrect location.

I get that all the time. It ends up me getting blocked for 30 seconds or however long.

Yeah, unfortunately most of the time I use that, the tank marker is on the wrong spot, sometimes on friendly positions :-(

It's a bummer & no mistake.

El-V's suggestion is about the best and only solution short of getting close enough to "skip" the intervening "a big and old rock".

But then..... you don't want to be between a "big and old rock" and a hard place, do you?

Bummer :(

At a large distance the BF2 engine spots anything as "enemy infantry", whether it be infantry, a helicopter, or a tank, doesn't matter. It's as if it recognizes that there's an enemy there, but can't distinquish for itself that there's a vehicle there. Sometimes, depending on how much larger of a distance, I find that it either cannot spot at all, or occasionally spots with a short-stop (displaying the target at a shorter range than actually true).

In those cases I'm doing the same as Vikingo explained, but sometimes, when the distance to the enemy inf. is shorter the same problem occurs - in that case I just switch to primary weapon without moving in any other direction and trying to put target on line of sight of mentioned weapon (without scope) - and in most cases it works...
