If your getting a crapload of lag, and your system is up to smoke, you might consider upgrading your Internet connection.

At any rate, your Radeon will do the job handily (My 9800xt works well, yours is a much better card) I run one gig Ram at medium and have no problems. 2 gigs of Ram would mean you could run higher settings.

The one thing I'd advise you to get for cheap coin, is a decent sound blaster (audigy) hardware sound card to help take the load off your CPU. Imagine being in a serious firefight with 20 or more players; weapons sounds, vehicles, Player voice overs etc. Your on-board software sound has to render all that along with game movement putting an undue load on your CPU.

There are many different routes you could take to get where you want to get to. Budget will play a role and how future proof you want your system to be. If your looking to simply beef up your current system the 2Gb of ram is necessary and next up would be a faster video card. A x1950XT would work nicely or a 7900 series but your getting closer to the price of a 8800GST 320mb.

Need more info to figure out what your after ?

Just to throw something into the mix -

I just upgraded from an AMD XP3200+ @ 400mhz with 2gb DDR to an AMD64 X2 6000+ with 2 gb DDR2

I have kept my old 6800 GS (VGA) card on a new Asrock mobo - my fraps has jumped from approx 45 to 70 !!!!!!

I think a damn good upgrade that cost less than 180 quid for the CPU, 2 gig of corsair memory and and the new mobo (mobo is the only one on the market that has VGA for socket A2 I think)

An awful lot cheaper than a new intel come PCI system

By the way, I also have an X-fi soundcard that I carried over which seems to take a load off the cpu as well.

The resolution I play at is 800 x 600 on a 19 inch screen. I have 512 mb of Ram currently, 992 MHz, an AMD Athlon 64 Processer 3500+. My budget is 200 bucks or less, I am also looking to speed up my computer for more FPS, and as one of the posts here suggested me getting a new internet connection, im not getting any lag really.

200 bucks- Get 2 gigs of ram and a video card thats a 7600GT or better. This will cost between 200-300 bucks and should GREATLY improve your gaming experience. I've got 3.2 machine, 2 gigs of ram and 7600GT. I run everything on high with 2x AA.

is the 7200GT made by Nvidia? or ATI?

Nvidia makes these, note it is a 7600GT not 7200.

I would consider looking at used video cards if your really straped for cash. Your best bet will be to look at benchmarks online for the cards in your price range to see whats the best bang for the buck. ATi does have the x1600 series or the x1950 series as well if you want ATi. Again check the bench marks for scores to see how they handle games.

Get more RAM, at least 2gb - maybe $100. I run a similar system, only slightly better - AMD Athlon 64 4000+, 2gb DDR4200 RAM, Radeon x800XL, and a SoundBlaster Audigy 2. The machine is over 2 years old and I play all maps on PR with everything cranked to the max, including Anti-Aliasing.

The computer I had before this one (AMD Athlon XP 2800+, Radeon 9700 Pro, 2GB RAM, SB LIVE XGAMER circa 1999) ran vBF2 (not PR) with everything on high but no Anti-Aliasing. After getting the new machine (first one listed above) two years ago, I tried running this old one (2800+ and 9700Pro) with the same hardware and only 1gb of RAM instead of 2...needless to say, BF2 ran like ****, could barely manage Medium/Low settings. The lesson? For the BF2 engine, and PR in particular, more RAM = WIN.

Also I just raised my resolution from 800 x 600 @ 60 mhz, to 1024 x 900 @ 60 mhz or something like that and it runs like a charm on low, but then again to achieve the greatest gameplay I have to get 2 gigs of ram. Im tired of playing on low even though the game is still fun, but if its all on high then it would be so awesome.

I'd suggest getting atleast 1gb of ram if you are on a budget, it did the trick for my ghetto rig

You have 512mb ram that's on-par for low settings, get at least one more stick of 512 (one gig total for medium settings), better yet get 3 more sticks of 512mb 2 gigs total. Remember higher settings are directly related to requiring more ram. To locate the exact ram speed you presently have installed, use this handy program: http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php


The native resolution for BF2/PR is 1024x768 go back down from 1024x900 which is compatible with larger LCD displays.

So if you just want to move up to a higher setting that will about do it as your video card works ok for BF2/PR. I would still buy at least a $30-50 sound card as well though.

Well you can update your computer from pretty low to high standard for about 400$
Tho if your a student this is way to much for you, i say go buy more ram and that would up the quality of your pr some but if you want it to run smooht on high or even very high settings you need a totaly new computer not the latest but problebly a low to medium one on to days market.

My new rig thats going to be built this month cost me about 300-400$ tho i live and sweden and prices here are pretty low atm.

I got a box and harddrive and cd-rw / Dvd from my old computer.
im pretty sure that i can run bf2 on veryhigh (yes there is a very.high setup but you need to hax the config files) without a problem.
