SMART bombs

As you know, the current jet load-outs use conventional 'dumb' bombs.

I think it would be a good idea to bring in "SMART" bombs.

This could work by:

>>Getting specific ground troops to designate targets, and then the jet drops them.

Defense (anti-whore) against SMART bombs:

1. Smoke. Yes this can stop laser designation of targets. Also, this would mean we will have have to use older missile versions which use specific laser targetting, and not radar targetting. Yet, we could finally see a new implement for the UAV if we wanted to radar target enemies for SMART bomb designation.

2. Drop the bombs within a designated radius of the target site. This would prevent any silly, "drop anywhere and forget" methods of bombing. The target radius could be say that control point.

3. Only speciffic ground troops can designate targets, which then have to be approved by pilots, or whatever.

I quote from a website:
Both of these systems can be highly effective, but they have one major drawback: The bomb sensor has to maintain visual contact with the target. If cloud cover or obstacles get in the way, the bomb will most likely veer off course.
This would mean visual contact needs to be maintained for succesful bomb hits.

Obviously I don't know if this is all possible with the BF2 engine, but just an idea.

Laser targeting was planned for BF2, the targeting binoculars are still in the game files IIRC.

This interview from OCT 2004 explains...
Question sent in by: Mike Martin
Could you explain how the new missile targeting system works on jets and helicopters and does it have something to do with laser targeting?

Scott Evans: Battlefield 2 has both heat seeking missiles and laser designation devices. The Special Forces kit gets the laser designator in Battlefield 2, which allows this soldier to "paint" an enemy target with a laser beam. Once this is done, a pilot can fire laser guided missiles into the target. It's very much a teamwork activity. Many vehicles in Battlefield 2 fire heat seeking missiles which are basically fire and forget – they home in on a heat source. Pilots can defeat these missiles by dropping flares, which create a heat signature that can spoof missiles into missing... until they run out of flares. :)

I would definately fly more, as well as be more aware of the A/C above me.

exactly! It would also increase ground defense awarness, and make surface-to-air defense more of a need.

I believe SOFLAMs are mostly used now as older Laser Marking devices can be viewed by enemies through their NV goggles. This is why Army SF invested in these before going behind enemy lines in Iraq.

I'm telling you, let's just put in JDAMs and then we can just stay at the spawn bases and watch the fireworks. Think of all the fighting it would save. Hey, wait...

Well this is a realism mod so that sounds about right

Im all for having guided munitions, would make people appreciate air support more.

It would also provide one of those cool movie moments  where troops are pinned down by armor, losing men rapidly, desperatly calling in for air support.

BOOM

Pilot saves the day

I prefer those cool movie moments where the troops hit the tank with a Dragon and about half a dozen AT-4s.
