Tanks/Helis

Chopper pilots, how many times have you been shot down by a tank, apc, or occasionally .50 cal?

.50 cal is kinda iffy, you "can" shoot a heli down with it irl, but its harder than it is in PR

with a tank shell or apc, are you kidding me?

i've played kashan a couple times, cruisin around in a heli, then i see a little flash of light from a brown lump about 500 meters away, and my chopper spontaneiously combusts. a few seconds later, some tank commander says "BOOOOM" on the chat.

should this be worked on some way?

i can shoot down helis all the time, they fly to low and hover for 1 sec to long and it shoot them. this is not unrealistic, what would really help is a 2000m view distance on a map like kashan so heli dont have to fly so low, then you might say that the tank could see you from longer distances and shhot you but the time it would take for the round to trave would make it very hard to hit a heli at 2000m.

I think tanks taking out helis is fine. It means that you're not flying the chopper correctly, and you deserved to be owned.

no, it mean that choppers dont have proper AT weapons , until that , keep dying trying to hit something with the tvguided missil.

In real life tank crews are trained to shoot down helicoptors with the main armament, so i think its cool.

i can hit a tank with every tv missle i shoot, it is when the guy flying the heli hovers we get shot out of the sky. if you are in a heli and you keep moving the chance of you getting hit by a tank is small.

Watch some films about attack helicopters tactics and try to use them (hide behind the hills, hit and run, etc.).

I think if the barrel didn't move as fast it might be a little harder to shoot down a fast moving target, because right now the barrel can rotate at an incredibly unrealistic speed.

I agree, (chopper altitude matters!).

The problem is not that tanks can shoot down low flying choppers. It’s more about choppers not being able to target tanks from a higher altitude. Best way to fix this is to give the at-rocket tv-screen more up/down mobility. That way you won’t need to descend that much to fire at-rocket.

Try flying pretty high on any map and you will notice that it is really hard to shoot or even spot you. I don’t think tanks can pull its gun that high. You are basically immune against tanks or other non AA fire.

A tank in realife have the ability to shoot down heli's, if the chopper stay at law altitude and he don't take escaping manouvers he could be shot down, i wouldn't say easily but it's possible. modern tanks (like the Merkava mk III, and VI) are designed to have the ability to track and destroy fairly fast moving targets. here's a movie, they shot on a remote controlled heli 1.5 m long, and hit..take a look:

But that also makes no sense, if it's based on realism. Granted, I have no idea how much the missile is allowed to change direction.

HOWEVER, I doubt that a chopper that is perfectly parallel to the ground(to induce no diving or forward movement,), can have it's missile fire, and arc down more than 45 degrees to hit the target. If I remember correctly, or at least from vBF2, the missile can arc down quite a lot too, so I don't see it as the problem.

But as altitude is a problem, the chopper pilot first, should know where the TV "targeting" is on each chopper(it actually varies in vBF2), not sure if it varies in PR.

Thus, if there is any communication between the pilot and gunner, the pilot can simply arc the chopper down, the gunner can then fire the tv missile and do slight adjustments compared to the pilot who doesn't move and the gunner has to click his mouse up the buttocks to change directions.

Or simply hide behind some terrain. If your chopper is high in the sky, I wouldn't worry about tanks so much, but fighters ...

I meant the targeting camera not the tv-missile itself. If you try to fire the missile from a dead angle it will miss, (you will never be able to make the missile turn in time). I didn’t want it to be a freaking missile turret, just a switch from targeting camera to warhead camera aka (tv-missile), where the targeting camera has a bit more up/down mobility. I hope this explained it better.

And let’s not be too picky about hyper realistic solutions that the BF2 engine can’t handle, (crappy view distance, or graphics preventing proper concealment).

I rather heave a good tank killer then a flying coffin. Some tiny realism sacrifices must be made for the fun factor. Why do you think Jesus powered medics exist in PR

fly at 600 ft+ of alt and you wont have to worry about it. if you cant hit with a tv missile from there then get out of the chopper and let some one who knows how to gun in.
The problem atm isnt that the tanks are too strong its that the chopper can not engage from ranges any where near what it should be able to. the missiles on the chopper should fly much faster and should have much further range.

yha i would really like the tv giuded to last twice as long of go twice as fast.

maybe take out the tv guided missiles and put the laser guided rockets from the SU-34? Like on ArmA.

The M830A1 also mounts a proximity switch on the flight projectile nose. Manually set upon gun loading, this allows the M1A1/M1A2 tank to self-defend against attacking helicopters with the 120mm main gun, a capability never before possessed by a Main Battle Tank. The multi-purpose cartridge is also extremely effective against buildings, bunkers, and light armored vehicles. The M830A1 was fielded in 1994 and is currently still in production.

Can you say PWNED?

The biggest change required is to the players who fly the helis. I wouldnt mind seeing a proper scrim video involving the cobra, etc just to see how well it could work in game if used properly

Anything below 200 alt is low and vunerable to attack imo

The swedish designed apc cv90 has so advanced targeting computer that it can calculate the speed of a airplane and shoot it down. In Finland our cv's are the second best AA's :)

So I think it's really realitic to tanks shoot down helis. Comon, if untrained insurgent can hit a blackhawk, so why trained tank crew couldn't hit a heli with autotargetübercomputer system?
