please, I see PR noobs all the time

there was one guy who asked question after question of basic pr stuff, spamming up chat and making it hard to focus on gameplay.

i told him, "please dude, just read the manual"

to which he replied, "F*CK U MAN, I dont need no f*ckin manual"

he was kicked from the server shortly thereafter.

I posted a thread a long while ago about PR training tips, but couldn't find it.

I seriously suggest that instead of just putting the little pdf on the desktop (everyone deletes it)

make it a requirement or make it VERY ENCOURAGED to read the manual before playing.

we could even bring back the gray help boxes

yeah, they were a pain in the ***, but if you didn't know how to play vBF2, they helped, and thats why DICE put them in.

It seems as if someone asks where the designated supply zone is in every single PR session I partake in.

Making people read documentation can be a serious hassle. I think the best way to get the point across is to underline that there are lots of features in PR which are not self-explanatory, but easy to get when it's explained to you how, and that reading the manual is therefore strongly encouraged. Put this in many places, including the installer, in big, red, bold-face letters.

Also, if possible, change the icon of the manual icon on the desktop. People delete or ignore pdf files by instinct.

Finally, I'd suggest that you make a reference sheet version of the manual which covers only the most basic things and is at most two pages long, preferably just one. Furthermore, have the installer prompt and strongly recommend you to print this reference sheet.

Way too many people these days are too lazy to read documentation.

But BF2 wasn't an incredibly realistic highly involving game like PR is. I understand what you mean, but really, in BF2, its ok to not know what you are doing and just run around and learn... in PR, its just a little bit different. Although not technically, but really, people are coming to PR for a more realistic and less gamey play. PR has added so much content that theres NO way you could play PR as its meant to be played without either a. reading the manual, or b. asking every single question in-game

While theres nothing wrong with questions in game, it becomes a problem when the same person asks question repeatedly and assumes other players are OBLIGATED to answer.

But really, i cant think of a way to make people read it, other than maybe having various screenshots pop up during installation that illustrate requesting kits, RP's, some basic things like spawn times, civilians, etc. Have the installer go full screen and just cycle through 5~10 images or something...

is that possible with the current installer PR uses?

can we switch the desktop shortcut of PR with the shortcut for the PDF? then if a Noob tryed to start PR it would be the PDF. If you read the PDF then it says to click on the renamed shortcut.
[trick them to think the Manual is PR shortcut and if they read the manual they know the PDF logo is the REAL PR]

You know, a lot of people found the whole training thing in AAO full of patriotic BS (they are right about that) - but it also served a purpose: training.

You actually had to learn how to use things like the javelin before using it. Seriously, that type of single-player mandatory training is the best idea i've seen in a long time to make the learning curve a bit more bearable in realism based games. Only, in AAO, the whole patriotic thing was somewhat exagerated, but something like this is very interesting for this type of game.

Comparing BF2 and PR is like comparing apples and oranges. The only similarity between them is that they're fruits, or in our case, games running on the same engine.

PR has more in common in terms of attitude and game play with ArmA. And I've never heard anybody ask a question on ArmA that indicated they hadn't read the manual *and* various internet articles.

It's a question of expectations. People always make excuses for the noobs, saying it's not their fault they're too lazy to read a well produced manual. Well it is. These noobs need to grow up and take 10 minutes out of their day before taking more time out of the days of others with their noobiness.

RTFM

disclaimer: this is not the official position of the PR team. I'm actually not sure what the official position is.

so you didnt hate it when you were on Wake and someone completly dominated your team from the sky, then you would wait in line for a jet and then a "noob" gets it before you and crashes taking off?

it's still annoying and you can bet that there are stupid questions being asked for all other games,

PR isnt the only game where there are people asking stupid questions that they could know the answer to like "Whats the shovel for?".

AAO Butchered most of the training, why the heck do I have to sit through a 15 minute lecture about bleeding, another one on airway management and then one on assessing who needs help first when all you do ingame IS HIT THE F KEY!!!!

Or crawl through a whole map trying to avoid detection for 30 minutes!!!~!!!

To get my post back on topic :P There should be some sort of a test with questions about this stuff and you must score say 80% or higher to access the .exe :)

It does simulate you being a qualified medic. Plus, it ensures that retards with ADD won't select the medic option, but rather, that it'll be used by dedicated players. Same with E&E - casual players won't be in special forces (which kinda makes sense - not every soldier is a member of special forces).

Of course, it doesn't always work this way. But still, the concept itself can be useful. Imagine having to sit through a lesson about basic physics of flight before getting to fly a plane in PR. You sure would have less retards flying.

So far, I was lucky enough to meat only newbies (newbie=new player, willing to learn; opposite to noob, which is a new player, that don't give a F on the game principle).
Last chat was like this:
"Where do I request a kit ?"
Have you read the guide ?
"No"
You should really do so - it's hard to explain everything over the chat
"OK, I'll do it after this round"

Now this is how it should go.

Anyway, have you ever played the recent version of Sandbox ?
They have some funky feature there - in main menu they've replace the BF:HQ for HELP.
Since the BF:HQ is useless in PR as well, what about trying to do the same ?

Or what about an icon "Play Project Reality" creating on the desktop after instalation.
After you click it, it'll open a PDF (or any other format) manual like "Welcome to Project Reality. Before you start playing, please read through the following manual" and with a button at the end, that'll create a PR shortcut.

YEAH !
Trick them, make a deliberate act to skip over the manual.
It won't help much in the actual training of newbs and it won't do anything for n00bs but it will give some us the moral high ground from which we can decimate the ignorant like the British at Omdurman.

Can't remember if anyone answered me before but is there anyway of creating the BF2 like tips that come up? (the things with the text and the cliché U.S. military voice overs) So when you come to a rally point, it'll give you an explanation of what they do like Vanilla did. Dunno if it'll work out due to peoples profiles, as people will have turned the tips off by now, and I dunno if there would be any way of forcing them to turn back on for PR.

Plus the whole thing would probably take ages to do if it's even possible...

I think the best is to be patient or ignorant to the "n00bs".. We were all newbies to start off with. Some are happy to ask questions, some are not.. In any case, we don't want to scare off any players from the mod.. or..?

I think people asking where the designated supply zone is almost as annoying as people asking about the M82.

There you go! I'll fashion you into a liberal yet! ;)

Well first of all, I only played Wake for 1942. I played BF2 for maybe a week before finding PR and making the switch, so I couldn't say. But I'm sure I would be pissed off. The noob used a team asset that he didn't know how to use. He screwed everybody else over. Why did you think that wouldn't piss me off?

And as I said before, I have yet to see a stupid question asked in ArmA. Every once in a while you get a question like "I'm stuck on free look, how do I fix it?" But hitting 0-0-7 to fix the headbug is not in the manual, and it's not something most people would remember from online reading without having experienced the headbug themselves.

how about instead of the annoying tips, you can have bill boards at main base spawns that advertise tips for playing in a propaganda style fashion
