Navigation, and the modern soldier.

An idea came to me regarding the map which can be brought up by pressing the default M key, and the compass.
Currently, the compass displays a small map of the area around your immediate vinicity, as well as both spotted and allied players.
I opt for a sort of... reconsideration to this feature. When running from place to place, the compass should be basic; featureless to the extent that it will not show you your current location on the map, but it will display your orientation, and objective or order marker, artillery strikes, the UAV (when it is re-implemented) and the supply drop. This is very much like the system which is used in Call of Duty 2, the question remains, would it make it more realistic? I am not completely certain if all soldiers of the modern age carry GPS systems. Thus, on that note I move onto my next suggestion:
If you wish to access your battlefield map (the one which pops up when the M key is pressed) you should be forced to crouch down behind cover, then you can press the corresponding key to pull up your map, or pocket, but military grade, GPS reciever to take a quick glance of locate your location relative to your allies which also register on the GPS map. When you are done, pack it away, and off you go.
Currently, I am uncertain how navigation is done in current, or in the context of BF2, the 'modern' armed force. Has the technology become microengineered enough that every single soldier has a GPS built into a small screen mounted right in one of his eyes (Ghost Recon 3, if I recall correctly)?
At anyrate, I hope I have explained my idea in clear enough terms. I'd like to hear feedback from the community and the developers on this idea.

Yeah, those are some pretty good suggestions you got there.

Indeed you have.
I whole heartedly agree. (with exception to the re-implementation of the UAV but, that's another story.)
Im not sure if the actual Compass is part of the Mini-Map or if they can be seperated. But if they can, I think the suggestion mentioned above would be excellent!
The Mapping idea is good as well. Maybe even a little imagery to make it actually LOOK like a GPS?
Realistically, at this day & time, in any armies budget, I think handheld GPS systems are much more viable. I'm not saying helmet mounted aren't possible or do not exist because me of all people knows very well that they do but, production has not begun for something like that yet. At least not to my knowledge.

I too totally agree with these suggestions.
If they can be implemented I think it would definetely add to the realism in the game, though I'm not sure to which extent GPS navigation ecuipment is being issued to soldiers. But that's for the Military Advisors say.

Odd, I've always heard that military grade GPS system where *ALOT* more accurate than anything in civilian use.
But I suppose they spend all their budget on other other toys instead, heh.
Personally I dont think we should have more than a map and a compass on it (ie both the map and compass show in map mode, but nothing in regular combat mode).

Well, if GPS is being used by soldiers in the armies of today it is realistic. Realistic means something that has a chance to make it into Project Reality.
One thing, would the MEC have GPS as well? And China?
Btw,
2000th Post!!

I'm happy to see that the community has recieved the idea so well. I look forward to reading some comments by the the actual development team too.
Dawdler;
If what you suggest becomes preferable, we may have to extend the amount of time a 'spotted' enemy is viewable on the map.
GRB;
On the subject of the 'future' soldier, what you say reminds me of this one suit I saw that was being tested by the Army. It had a black body glove of leather, and its weapons consisted of 25 mm mini-missiles and a 5.56 or 7.56(is that the right calibre?) standard gun. Both of these weapons were mounted in an odd box which is attatched to the forearm. It also had its own navigational computer and a HUD built into the kind of helmet that you would use on a sports motorcycle. It looked really weird, yet scary for the amount of integrated technology it carries. That was a long time ago though...

Well MEC dont really exist do they, unless we were to change MEC to an atualy eastern army.
As for china I do not see why they would not have GPS they have the money, it may not be as advanced and normal infantry soldiers probably wouldn't have GPS.
One thing that you have to keep in mind is if you give one side something you have to give the other side something to even the balance otherwise no one will want to play as China or MEC.

Even though the mec doesnt exist, you can imagine what a conglomeration of what arab countries would yield, especially with all of that oil money.

I have never understood how a UAV could display RADAR marks where enemy players are. lol. Should make it to where, if it is even able to be altered, where on a flight (5 minute spans between uses) it can shoot hellfires at enemy targets like they do in RL.... Just a thought

I'de rather not talk about the UAV...Not in this thread anyways.
