top attack mode for TOWs

well, just a sugestion :P

TOW had a top attack mode , basicaly is this ,The TOW 2B is designed to fly over the top of a tank and destroy it from above, where is is less heavily armored, by simultaneously detonating the missile's two Explosively Formed Penetrator (EFP) warheads downward.

dont know if is posible , but since claymores have the same type of funtion (the explotion is directed) maybe with the missil can be the same , so you just need to point the tow sighly above the tank , and when its near , the missil itslef can be destroyed (like flak nullets in poe2) and direct the explotion downward to hit the tank .

I just read a thread earlier today about how there is working code for a Javelin which does pretty much what a top attack TOW would do. So a top attack TOW seems plausible, but ultimately presents the same balance issue. There is no point in making it into a Top Attack weapon if it doesn't do increased damage, and if the other team's mounted AT weapons can't realistically have their damage increased to compensate, there is a fundamental game play imbalance - thus its hard to justify, even if it is realistic. Also, the TOW would probably have to change to a targeted weapon (something like the targeting boxes in helos and jets) instead of one that acts like it is wire-guided (again, might be realistic but could also be called unfair). That being said, I would love to see a top attack TOW AND the Javelin someday :)

Top attack mode on a Tow2b and top attack on a Javelin are two completely different methods. Only commonality is they both make tanks go boom.

Well that might be tough for the tow since it is wire guided. There could be issues with it gaining that much altitude then coming down with a wire attached to it. But the javelin, most definitely.

It's more complicated than that. The TOW-2B still has a horizontal flight pattern like other TOWs, but the software instructs the missile to fly ~1 meter above the point of aim. When the missile is above the target, it's magnetic sensor detonates the 2 downward facing warheads, which are side-by side, not in tandem (ie: one behind the other). As such, it's only useful against armored vehicles; it couldn't be used against bunkers or buildings. And unless they improved the software in the last couple of years, it's pretty damned unreliable.

The javelin on the other hand, uses an IR sensor, and it's flight profile has the missile fly up into the air and then come down nose first onto the top of the target, where it's tandem warhead is most effective.

That is the TOW top attack mode. Flies straight, blows up over the target with EFP's pointed down. The Javelin literally flies up into the air in a arc then comes down and the entire missile impacts the tank.

I didn't presume to know how it worked IRL, but thanks for the education  I don't disagree that they are completely different in the way they attack targets, but they might have to work pseudo-similarly in game if either are ever implemented. The only reason I mentioned the Javelin was because it had recently been discussed from a coding and game play point of view in another thread. Not sure if the BF2 engine allows for proximity detonation of flying munitions. Even if it does, it might require a targeting system like what I have seen in some BF2 javelin mod videos. If the engine doesn't allow proximity detonation, a top attack TOW could be implemented by having the missile fly low above the target (as in the video here) and then quickly dive into it to detonate its warhead by hitting the tank's collision mesh (like any other AT munitions). Not entirely realistic, but better than having the missile just fly over top and not detonate until it hits something else. But what do I know, I just dabble in the theoretical :)

well, in poe2 the AA shells detonate when they are at a certain distance from the target , so maybe that can be done to the missil, so you just need to pint sighly above the tank and the missil will make the work :P

ad about the balance isue , well the hj-9 had a similiar system so i dont see any problem there .

from the gameplay perspective its no diferent from straight TOW impact, therefore not worth of botering with, while we have so much more important things to do.

it can kill in one shot , so they can defend better .
