I installed the patch and when I went to play the single player it would just close down the when i tried multiplayer it said invalid cd key yet i can play normal bf2 any advice?

Try manually updating PunkBuster although this doesn't sound like the other problems I have heard of with PB.
I am assuming you have a legal copy of the original game as well.

...and if that fails, go to your Battlefield 2/Support/Battlefield 2_code.exe and put your key back in, that'll rewrite it to the registry so if anything dodgy has happened there it'll get fixed.

That doesn't always work harrod, well not for me anyway. I'm currently reinstalling everything, try that.
