Tanks vs. Helicopters

Ok, so lets say were all playing on kashan desert, and were sneaking around in an apache. Suddenly boom a tank shell hits the apache blowing it into smithereens. Is this realistic, not really. I just cant stand having a "tank hunting helicopter" being "hunted" by the triple octipal zoom of a **** t72. This is why I think it needs to be changed. Mabey somehow make it so the apache can take one tanks shell and not explode? i know that an apache would never be able to take one tanks shell and still fly but then agian how many times do you hear of a tank hunting helicopter brought down by a tanks main gun? Sure, mabey by a machine gun, but a 120mm cannon? not likely. Hope you take this into consideration. Would increase the fierceness of attack helos and require people to use the anti air kit.

Isn't this just trading one unrealistic thing for another unrealistic thing?

I think it is in fact easier for tanks to shoot down choppers in r/l, as the lase can let the turret track a moving object etc aswell as better turret stabilization etc. Its more down to the pilot to make sure he dont put himself in a position to get shot by a tank ;)

Yep, tanks irl are capable of shooting down chopters too. It's more a difference in tactics when compared to rl that results in so many chopter deaths in PR I think.

Yeah I guess so... People just get surprised because in propaganda-like official and Discovery Channel level films picture the attack helis as ultimate superior tank-bangers. :p

Well, they are I think, but that's mostly because they make it damn hard for the tanks to hit them :p

I've had times where a chopter just hung still for like 5 seconds while firing a TV guided missile at someone else...I'm sorry, but that's just asking for it ;)

In a attack chopper in PR, if you are cautious and use attack markers to guide your T.V missiles at around 1km away, you can take out tanks without them even knowing about you. This depends on having a cautious pilot and a gunner who is SL and has an inkling of where the armor concentrations are.

i think u should make it easier to shoot the choppers down. I mean a well aimed shot into the motor and its down

They might be superior to tanks -- I didn't say it otherwise 8) -- but a cluelessly drifting chopper can be the victim of a sharpshooting gunner. Films just don't include that part I guess. Makes me wonder... maybe it's the PR pilot's fault afterall! :D

You really shouldn't be "sneaking around" low/slow enough for a tank to hit you anyway. A good PR pilot should wait up in the clouds (or away from danger) until a target is spotted, swoop down, gunner fires TV missile, swoop away.

Choppers should generally stay away from hovering anywhere less than 800-1000m.

This might be the point where the topic changes from "PR Suggestions and Feedback" to "In-Game Tactics and Strategies" section. :)

actually no

irl, attack choppers are very close to the ground, as they use the hills trees etc to hide behind, and only pop up to shoot at an identified target

if ur up in the air, very easy targets for AA of basically all types

Yeah I agree. Tanks can only elevate their turrets about 30-45 degrees whereas humvee/vodnik turrets and APC turrets can go about 60-80 degrees. AA can go even further. Hovering at 800m to 1000m is a little ridiculous with the view distances. The gunner won't even be able to properly shoot off his missiles.

it will never be real, in RL choppers own tank because they can see them from more than 500 meters away and kill their target before the tank can even hear the chopper in the air. we obviously cant do this in pr, mostly because it would suck ***, but the bf2 engine wouldn't let you

500m? I think you mean something like 5km :p

Choppers are superrior because of their engage ranges and tactics, bu IRL tank really DO hunt choppers, there are even special shells, they are lighter, faster and use kinetic energy to destroy its target. I have no intention to look for it in the internet to proove anything. It is simply true, they're hunting for choppers and they are very effective in doing so, thats why best tactic for pilots is to stay invisible, not the fire power or targeting system (but they help ofcourse).

I don't know about that. Without accurate intelligence and all things being equal, my money is on the tank.

o_O We're talking about attack helis here. They are obviously meant to kick the *** of tanks.

I know what you're talking about. You over-estimate the power of the attack helicopter - a capable weapons platform but limited and fragile. Where an AH is designed to fight tanks, a tank is built to fight everything (bar jets)
