What does "hard-coded" mean? What is a source code? And what can you do that code?

I've always wondered what "hard-coded" means everytime someome suggests an outlandish addition to PR, such as fast ropes. I see people suggest fast ropes and what not and wonder why can't they be added. I scroll down to see 500 responses of " ITS HARD CODED " as if everyone here knows what it means. I am one who does not know what hard coded means, could you tell me. I would also know what the source code is, and what you could do with it. It would be nice to know next time I have a good idea for PR. And if you had the source code, what could become of PR anf all BF2 mods? Just a thought, but why don't you have the source code if it is so vital to BF2?

Basicaly it means it's not doable with the game engine.
The source code lets you, I belive, "unlock" the gameengine so you can do alot more stuff than just what is possible with the BF2 Editor.
Someone with more technical knowladge can probably give you more details.

The source-code is owned by EA, and it is not likely that they are going to give it out anytime soon. All the chances made in PR are through Python, which only allows a certain amount of changing.

Hard coded means it's something coded deep in the BF2 engine that we can't really change. We can only change stuff to a certain level.
Source code is the programming code that makes BF2 work. We also can only change some stuff, not the entire thing.
We can change the game with some smart coding to get some cool stuff working that people didn't think was possible, like the vehicle damage system, kit request, rally points, commander assets, and some other cool stuff coming in 0.7

We can't bow... that would involve adding an addition to the player-character movement, and it's hardcoded
But yeah, good for someone to point out that newcomers to the forums might not have a clue what people are on about... thanks for reminding the community on that front!

Damn then crouch in there honor since bowing is either
A)Hardcoded
B)Not possible with the Bf2 engine
C)Looks gay with all player models being male and all...
D)All of the above.

"Stop! Hammer Editor time!"
Oh, wait. We're talking about BF2. Damn, that would have been such a good joke for a Source game.

Ryan in short words it means they cant change it becasue the coders cant put it in the game. And the rest is above.
