It looks like a rubber band that holds together both (front and rear) aim point covers.

You can see more when you are reloading the gun ;)

Its an elastik...

It keep the M68 glass protector away from the optics... its just for add details.

i got CAMO skin on my M4 too... my barett is camo too, beretta and thing like that :) you can find recolored skin tread in comunity modin forum

Its an elastic band hooked around the lens covers to prevent them from inadvertently closing. Although it would really only matter if the one closest to you closed, but that is neither here nor there.

Surely you're pretty screwed if either one shuts? What with not being able to see through the scope anymore...

You can still use it with the cover on the front of the Aimpoint closed. It is a reflex sight so you use it with both eyes open. And since you are looking at it with both eyes open it creates an optical illusion, and the dot will appear to be on the target even with the front cover shut.
