Friend or Foe?

Post by Sadist_Cain »

I know (especially with vanilla n00bs) that there is a lot of accidental teamkilling as a result of the delay on the nametags being shown.

Still though it's easy enough to just look on your GPS and see where he is, and although this may be possible with the new landwarrior system, it gave me a thought. How about making it so that you can't see friendly nametags OR see them on GPS at all until you spot them.

There's already a few bugs in the spotting system that seems to cause some things to not show up at all, and others to show as a green friendly.

I keep on running through dense forest and calling for a chopper extraction, so I throw down my extraction smoke in a clear visible area for him to set down on, but the guy already knew exactly where I was when he took off so hes landed 200 metres in the opposite direction.

The more I think about it the more it seems right (Not only because in reality were not all big visible green dots with nametags) but the radio communication involved so you dont hit your friendlies etc.

My final reason, for those who like to run around like a loonie on their own on the map, they will genuinly be alone, they wont know where their squad is to support them, hopefully they wont last long.

Just not having your position plotted on a map every second will open gameplay to a new level.

Me done, your thoughts? :D

the problem would be your own squad. I mean, when i'm next to these people i would see who they are because i can see their faces. In BF2, you cant see faces, so at least at very short distances the tags should stay.

yeah you definitely need to be able to see name tags of the guys in your squad.
As for all friendly tags, to me it's a really small thing. I barely notice the tags anymore, it's the uniform that tells me who is an enemy and who is a friend.
So I wouldn't mind having them removed.

No minimap, no long distance nametags. That's what I want, but I'm just a masochist.
Dam straight!! tough love learn the hard way :D

How about a system where the players tags will come up if they press a key like affirmative, except change the sound.

I'm sure we've all seen films where in order to see whos friend or foe the friendlies have a codeword systems such as "thunder!" anyone who's friendly simply responds "Flash!" maybe this could also activate the name tags showing up for a period of time :D

What I'm getting at is a way for friendlies to make their tags visible by shouting, but only make them visible on the map if theyre spotted.

I played BGF mod the other day, You cant see the name of a tard in a vehicle, there is no way to fine the name of a person near you unless they are in a squad, then you have to match the name to location. It hampers Text based communication with your team.

Thats why I believe that you should be able to spot the friendly to have him come up on the map, and maybe you should always be able to see their name tags within 10 metres. After all, how far away can you see a 1 inch by 4 inch nametag?
With regards to TKers and smacktards, we can see what vehicles are being used by who on BF2CC, and usually if you need a name you'll find them.
Yes there will be teething pains, but no more than when we made the switch from vanilla to PR, the first few times you cap a teammate I think people will start to hesistate before squeezing the trigger... reality anyone? :D

most people spot the target at distance anyway because you cant be sure whether you're looking at the lil blue dot you think you are. and anyhow do we really want what has so far been an excellent mod to be catered for the idiots or do we want them to eventually learn and get the idea?

One way or the other it is frigging annoying to trapse through the jungle, searching for the clearing, positioning your forces to secure the area and chucking down extraction smoke... oh no wait he's decided to park back there, turn around lets go

Using voip instead of the minimap is fine in arma where the map lasts a week and the players are bots anyway but I dont want PR to be like that personally though I'll give anything a try (with alot of moaning :p )

One of the problem I can see with taking your team off the map and name tags etc is there is no real way to communicate outside of your squad so it'll be hard to know if it's friendly in the area or hostiles.

Guess it depends if the commander can still see everyone because at least then your SL could "radio in" and ask if there's friendlys near or not.
