Higher flight ceiling for aircraft

Hi guys,

After an intelligent suggestion for PR on another I use, I have decided to post it here to see if it's possible, and end up on the Devs' HUGE list of 'things to do' :D

The suggestion was:

'and give the planes some room ie. let them fly maybe up a bit more than 1000 ft god that pisses me off.
give them 10,000 ft'

Is this possible within the limitations of the BF2 engine? Also, do you think this is a valid idea?

In BF1942 there was a problem with extreme altitudes, in that everything started to skip around (ie an engine problem). But dont trust me on that, my memory is a bit dodgy. I just seem to recall something like that, lol.

Anyway, the problem is that its of no use. Planes simply cant find each other! If we had flight simulator view distance, then yes there could be flight simulator height limits. But with infantry/vehicle simulator view distances... Well, you get the idea ;)

You cant increase flight Ceilings. It is actually based on the size of the map. each map is like a box. You can only fly in the available space of the box.

OK, well that clears that suggestion up :D

Cheers for the feedback!

In BF2 its not a Sky Box like it is in HL2 and manny other games, Its acturly a sky dome. In the very center of the map you can fly up the highest.

When crating a map there is a little tweak bar that says "map height" but im not excatly sure what this dose and aint played with it yet.

If it is possibal without decrasing performance then yes every 1 will love it 8)

flying for planes in bf2 is all mess up anyway becaeun the maps are too small. planes would be great in flashpoint but in bf2 where you can cross the map in a plane in les then 10 secs it really sucks

Where you fly doesnt matter as the skydome isnt a fixed object: It'll follow you.

So the skybox (or skydome ;) ) doesnt affect the planes ability to fly, nor does the map size.

I still think the limit is the technical limit where the BF2 coordinate grid system isnt accurate anymore (and then there's probably a cutoff somewhere). Which still doesnt matter as planes dont fly good in BF2.

try flying strait up, you will find you will hit a invisbal wall and get stuck, and the only way to become unstuck from it is to cut out your enegines and hope you fall down and then can regain control without going out of bands.

That wall is in the shape of a dome

But who says it have to be the skydome? ;)

If you fly up around 500 meters your plane starts shaking, I'm not sure of the exact point but yeah you lose control eventualy. This thread reminded me of the good old Mi-8 Hip space station from DC... good times. Anyways I've gotten up between 2000-3000 meters(2-3km) in BF2/PR just messing around. I really don't see the problem with it now, I mean you can't see past 300-400 meters which means planes have another 300 meter margin if you don't want to be seen. I just can't see how this is really a necesity or would add to game play.. it might even hurt it if people just take off for space every time they get shot at or as was seen in DC use helos as hovering spawn platforms(imagine a BH sitting up 1km over a flag out of a planes reach and raining down SF troops) One thing I'll say is that helos need to have a ceiling, if they don't now. If a plane can't stay up then a helo can't...
