Its basically a 3d model projected on a 2d surface. all the different stuff on there is different surfaces of a 3d object the modeler has chosen to be there, so when a texture is applied the 3d model will put the color of that position on that surface of the model. Its a bit hard to explain, but I have a modeling video tutorial you can watch some bits of to know exactly what its about, but its a pretty big download.

Hmm alright.
here is the link to the part about unwrapping and texturing:
http://www.moddb.com/downloads/7833/cre ... or-source/
If you want to learn it quickly I recommend watching the first half or so of "07 unwrapping.wmv" the last ~10 min of "08 unwrapping.wmv", the start of "09 texturing.wmv".. if you want some good tips on skinning weapons, then this guy is pretty damn good, so I recommend watching some bits of the texturing videos.
The only guy(s) I know thats better is Pride and [R-CON]Shifty.

I have done a LOT of work in photoshop, but I can say without any BS that texturing is one of the most challanging things I've tried so far. Maybe its becaues I cant be as creative as I sometimes are when I mess around, or maybe its because I have to draw within the lines and actually make something thats supposed to look like something.
