Surveillance / UAV

UAV is, hmm, a kind of wallhack. The plane which comes in 1.2, hmm, we'll have to see. But how about one person from the team dedicated to surveilance? Like the chopper in attachment, it's giving the commander constant sight of the battlefield from far away and is equipped with AT missles. I think it would be cool if you would put this into the mod. The line of sight would be the UAV effect in some area. Ideas?

That is the Kiowa support helicopter. It's already going in. See the media section. ( https://www.realitymod.com/index.php?page=gallery )

WOW Kickass, thanx GRB, sorry I didn't look myself. Hm, how is this going to be integrated into the gameplay? I saw a documentary where these were hiding behind trees, only the camera on top would stick up. Also, on my attached picture, it seems to be equipped with 4 AT missles, rather than the missles on the WIP (kinda look like the vanilla pilot missles).

Anyways, how about the idea that this little thingie would operate as a mobile UAV in some way?

Replace the UAV with one of these instead:

http://www.global-security-solutions.co ... copter.htm

The commander would have a low view of the battlefield and could move everywhere, but the weakness would of course be that it could be shot down.

Plus it would be just cool seeing a minature helicopter pop up behind a building, take a peak and then go down again, lol.

Not sure its possible, but why not make a UAV control unit, where by you enter it and can control the UAV camera. The UAV itself would move on its own in a sort of holding pattern and just circle. You could then click on the map and the UAV would move there. The camera on the UAV could then be panned, zoomed in and out and lock onto certain points.

I would like to see something like jellybelly's idea if possible, since that's sort of how they work in real life correct?

But wouldnt it be more fun if that UAV was a controllable helo (with a similar camera idea, although fixed left/right angles similar to the regular helo pilot seat (otherwise it would be difficult to control it))?

Its is not unrealistic at all and would be the perfect thing to deploy close to the action, as opposed to a UAV flying so close/slow you could almost jump up and grab it.

Well, if it were a controllable helo, it wouldn't be a UAV :) .

Anyway, I think a dev commented on this already in the 'EA beat you to it' thread (or one of a similar name).

Eh? So a remote controlled miniature spy helo wouldnt be a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle?

Oh, I hope this is the "unique" idea the devs will bring :)
If not, I can volonteer to model and code one (although I have no idea how remote control would work) ;)

Its not controlled in that sence of the word. It goes where you tell it and flys in a holding pattern above the area you specifify. You only control the onboard camera.

Oh I'm sorry dawdler I thought you meant one that you physically get into and fly. My fault. :)

I thought you were referring to the chopper in the picture at the bottom.

Anyway is there really a chopper UAV that is used as much as the fixed wing? If there is I suppose it could be in but I've never heard of one being used by the military.

Its probably not as much used (if at all) today. But BF2 is in the near future, right? ;)

Googled it:

Vertical Take Off and Landing Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (VTUAV)
The VTUAV System will be used afloat by Navy units and ashore by USMC units and will provide local commanders near-real time imagery and data to support Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) requirements. - http://www.fas.org/irp/program/collect/uav.htm

Hey, its even for the USMC :)

Interesting find, I guess it depends on how the Devs decide to go.

What function does the Kiowa have than ingame? What use of the cameras on top? You know, my idea declines even the word UAV, but I think it would be an interesting concept to have something like a MAV (manned :) ) That way the surveillance part of the game would depend on the skills of the coresponding players that either side has. I think it would be a nice addition to gameplay.

In real life the Kiowa is more a forward scout/target acuisition helo.

I watched a little documentary about the US army's helos and it explained the the Kiowa may be used in conjunction with other attack aircraft as a forward scout. The idea being, the Kiowa fly's down below some cover, eg a tree line or hill, and positions the ball camera just above the cover.

It then relays the position, data, video etc to commanders and pilots who decide on the best course of action. I believe it is also fitted with a laser designator.

Theres also a more heavly armed version called the Kiowa Warrior which baisicly carries out the same job but can also engage targets if its required.
Armament goes from anything such as Rockets and Hellfires to 50. cal or a minigun.

So, we'd have - Scan, UAV and Kiowa? How about Kiowa being UAV of some sort? I think it's stupid placing UAV every 2-3 minutes ingame. With the new patch you'll allways see the plane flying and hovering around. I think UAVs are barely detectable if they're not expected by the enemy and hence this is not a good solution for me (I will laugh when all players will start shooting at the UAV overhead). Also, the UAV effect incorporated in vanilla is silly! How about getting an overhead picture in the main map of some sort? Or how about the Kiowa hovering, looking towards some CP and hence providing the UAV vanilla effect (or similar) for their team? My point is, it would take skill to spy on the enemy rather than just placing UAVs all the time. It also could be countered, enemy comanders could for instance focus their strategy on countering enemy's surveillance. I think it would add to the gameplay very much improving teamwork as well. Man such a Kiowa pilot would be very important to his team, he'd have to fly perfectly and be very intelligent and reasonable as well.

I think its a good idea. With the lack of the commander, a player controlled UAV of sorts would make the game more teamwork based.

Pilot could fly the thing and use the rockets and the gunner could become a Forward Observer who can use the boom camera to spot out units and use the Laser Designator to call air strikes.
Would it at all be possible to have the Gunner/Forawrd Observer given the ability so that anything in his direct line of sight is revealed on the spin map?

Juro: the scan is already removed and the devs have said they are looking at different ideas as far as the UAV goes and I don't think anyone has said that the Kiowa will work in the same way as the UAV or the scan. I'm sure it's all well under control. :)

Have someone to fly it aswell UAV does mean "Unmaned Aireal Vehicle" that doen't mean it is run on auto pilot.

Yes they do hav a designator and they are design primarily for scouting.

the warrior is an atack varient basically
