Laser designators should be used to sight targets for bombers

Now, I've never flown in a bomber, but I doubt that the amazing see all targeting system that bombers have now is realisitic. I don't see any way a jet can go into a mode where it sees any mechanical object on the ground that is being manned. What we need are people with laser designators to paint targets and then they are "marked" on the fighters/bombers view. Also, I guess for the bomber, the copilots laser sight should help target enemy vehicles. The laser designators wouldn't just be restricted to vehicles, a person could paint a spawn point that has tons of people or a bridge. This, I think, would make bombers more fair and versitile than they currently are.

I mentioned this at some point, but squad leaders and the commander should be allowed to mark an area for airstrikes on the map. Fighters/Bombers will have this area marked on their screen as squad members have their atack and defend things marked.

Modern attack aircraft have dozens of different sorts of sensors and munitions. TV-guided, laser-guided, "dumb" bombs, etc.

Auto-locking is very advanced, and IIRC, is being tested by the US Military.. again IIRC, it basically consists of a super-smart computer that can recognize targets by their shape on the computer's monitors. Of course this is probably impractical as it'd have to be 100% infallable or it'd risk hitting friendlies all over the damned place (but hey, BF2 guided bombs do that!).. but realistically speaking, most modern ground attack munitions would follow either TV-guided like the attack helicopter weapons (which wouldbe pretty darn cool coming out of a bomber, if you ask me) and laser-designated where a gunner in an aircraft points a laser at a target, via onboard computer, and the missile guides towards that laser. Actually, it's very similar to the way current BF2 bombs work when they're NOT locked.. ie, when you're flying around, you can launch bombs and guide it.. thats basically laser-targetting right there.

But as most of us know it is a very ineffective way to guide them. It works sometimes, but at the speeds of those jets, the speed of that bomb (which is more like a missile), and the short viewrange, its almost impossible. It could be improved by making it 360 degree (downward) view radius in that gunner view so it can look in all directions and continue guiding the bomb after passing over the target, and increasing sightranges.

if I'm wrong, someone feel free to put me in my place.

The BF2 dumb bombing system seems like a dumbed down version of CCIP targeting. Since you can't control ground based radar locks due to it being fully automated. As far as ground targeting theres radar to lock on and/or fing targets, laser based guidance, TV guided, GPS (last I've read they can hit moving targets now), then theres independently guided cluster munitions that use IR and acoustical detection methods.

now this is what i think. We all know about the commanders "Squad Order" with "Squad Attack here" and there are many more like mine here, defend here ect ect, and it shows a Icon up on you HUD.

Now I'm going to let you guys into a little secret. 1 of my little clan tactics is to have all jet pilots in 1 squad, bomber being squad leader normally. Then we also have the commander. Hes looking around for lots of enemies, if he spots a group of guys, a tank or any thing he wants bombing he points it out on the map with a attack icon. 1 we can see around about it is on the mini map, and 2 if you have "3D Map" on then you get a little icon with a distance meter on the screen, now all you have to do is line your way up for a bombing run and bomb the shit out of that Icon and if its troops they cant run far by the time you can fly there and if they do move the commander can refresh the order and if its a tank you only need to look around that area for a big square 8-)

Now here is my suggestion. The commander should have a new order, that goes to all bombing targets regardless if they are in our out of a squad it will show up on there map and there HUD. can have its very own little "bomb icon" and then this can point out exact locations of bombing targets. Hence now the Commander will have a "manned arty" as such so its no crappy command of just telling where to put a arty drop as he shows the bomb location, then the pilot dose the rest of the work, this will = more teamwork 8-)

the JDAM that the JSF has uses GPS INS guidence so you can hint vehicles

Great idea!
I absolutely agree, and have nothing to add.

I didn't meen laser designators just for the laser guided bombing system, I meant it for the dumb bombing hud mainly. With the laser guided bombs I think that it should be an auto lock when you get close enough. For the dumb bombing system the laser would simply make a target apear on the hud. This way the bomber doesn't see all vehicles and anti air stations lit up when people manning them.

Glad someone uses the little idea that popped into my head Rhino. Great minds think alike.

What would be cool is NO tank targeting and just Lazer Guided

Yes. Please get rid of these magical green boxes painted on my tank by ungodly radar sensors detecting me through a damned house. I'd happily endure squad-leader requested air strikes or ones aimed by laser designators.

And as for artillery, I've seen a self-propelled artillery vehicle in the media gallery. And I have so called shotgun on it.
