Fly zone / maps

(I tried to search the subject, so if there is a thread about this, please link me one)

I have been wondering this for quite long time, all the way back to BF1942 demo and haven't seen/found answer for it yet: Why Battlefield and it's mods do not allow airplanes to fly over "map".

For example, Joint ops allowed player to fly (and travel) miles and miles over the initial "map"-area without invisible walls or "magical comissar" in the plane strangling and shooting you if you leave the "battlefield".
It was empty space, with no trees or objects (terrain was not flat thou) but you could always flank safely.

In BF2 and PR you have supersonic fighters which should operate MUCH more freely than these sand box sized battlefields, even with CAS in kashan you feel claustrophobic. For example eurofighters release their laser designated missiles so far away (IRL) that ground AA won't even hear them coming. See what I mean: YouTube - Eurofighter Typhoon; Nothing comes close

(And yes, I know this ain't aviation-simulator but unlocking the zones for airplanes would do much good for the gameplay regarding air support)

So please tell me, why airplanes are not allowed to fly over the zone without punish? Is the game engine limiting this feature or what?

cant be asked to read the entier topic but you can't have jet combat zones outside the map borders into the surrounding terrain as it causes loads of minimap problems.

Uhh, Ok - so if it's possible, then could you tell me what kind of problems it will cause with the minimap? if does not crash the server / cause lag for players etc. i dont see it as big problem... and couldn't it to be fixed so that it would show the player icon next grid line where it goes over the edge?

I think it was another Rhino-typo, should be

its hard to exsplain and even if i could exsplain it, it wouldn't archive anything since no one here would be able to fix it without changing the engine...

Put it this way, what happens is after doing it, the minimap is 100% not usable which would mean LGB runs etc would no longer be possible and jets wouldn't have any kind of working map which would cause too many problems.

If you want to you can easily try it, try reading my audit tut and try it out for yourself.

Rhino can make more HUGE maps! And on most maps when flying a plane you forget the area you are in. SO the no fly zones keep you in the field. I would get so lost. And Rhino you lost me at
hich would mean LGB runs etc would no longer be possible and jets wouldn't have any kind of working map which would cause too many problems.
Seems like a bunch of words to me.

hasnt POE2 found a way for this?

ie, really you need to have a minimap to do a LGB run otherwise you cant see if you are on target etc and not having a minimap would mean you would have no situation awarness when you couldnt see the terrain.

But you still can check the whole map, aye? In minimap you dont have enough vision / time while flying 0.8 Mach so personally i use the whole map to check all possible targets.

minimap = the "big map with the m key" and the small map in the top left, they both get fecked as they are both the same map.

Wouldn't also mess up cars and tanks with the map change?

na cos you can get jets to use a diffrent combat zone from anything else.

Rhino you are mad on this.

Even if you could make it really huge for the planes, the nubbies would fly off into the sunset with your jets. So it'd suck anyhow.

Instead of crashing them into what-ever comes around, would this be any worse? No.

I love flying jets in PR but I hate that there ain't enough space for 'em to operate.

Yeah I find it very difficult to operate in the area n all. How would the "nubbies" fly into the sunset anyway? Unless Rhinos maps a few kilometres of sunset a few hours flight away, there isn't THAT much map outside of the red hatching. What happens when you get to the very very edge of a map by the way? Is it a flat earth kinda situation where all you can see is sky? And is there an invisible wall or do you teleport into a dimension of buggyness and freezing?

It would be unbelievably cool - epic, in fact - if the map looped like those old arcade games. Wouldn't it be fun to see the same airplane whip by at 10000km/h time after time after time? It would also mean that you do see that noob pilot's plane again after he flies into what he thinks is infinity. Too bad it's hardcoded.
