High Ping kicks. Who decides?

I have a wireless internet and am subject to the occasional lag spike where my ping will jump from 80-90 to over 600 or so for a few seconds then settles back down again. This happens just once in a while and when it does . I simply stop trying to do anything until it settles down. If I'm in the middle of an open field so be it.

Some servers will then kick as my "average ping" (taken over the last few seconds..go figure.. a Homer Simpson thingy) exceeded the servers limit.

These servers I then remove from my favorites listing as its obvious the operators are still living in the 80's when dial up was predominant and high pinging players did lag a server. Its common knowledge these days (or at least it should be) that high pings don't lag servers anymore , just put the high pinging player at a distinct disadvantage.

Question is,is this a server side setting or a Punk Buster setting as some servers don't seem to do this to me.

Its a server side option to kick people with a high ping, I believe. There is not someone sitting there and kicking you when it happens.

If everyone has a low ping the game runs smoother, or something like that.

Yea I can see kicking for a constant high ping but something is averaging the ping over the last few seconds or simply sampling it occasionally and if it spikes , creating the kick.

My favorites list is getting kinda small  but thats not a problem for me as I don't get to play that often anyway , only need access to two or so servers I can play on and contribute to the servers I frequent for that precious "reserved" slot.

Was just wondering who and why the setting.

High ping coursing lag is just a myth.

I have had many an argument where ping doesn't matter. I, myself am in your camp when it comes to this. But as for not affecting other players your wrong.

Have you ever tried to hit someone who's 'warping' over the battlefield - it's really frustrating. For the most part your right, it shouldn't lag the server. However, Imagine a whole server filled with 600 - 1000+ pings it would be madness, no one would be killing anyone.

Just to be on the safe side server admins employ 'high ping kicks' for guys that have really high pings so they know that at least there will be decent amount of players not warping - I think at =TCC= ours is set to 300.

almost the smartest thing you have ever said, if you explained why.

its not 100% myth, back in the days of Quake 1/2 and games like that, due to bad network code and only 56k modems, high ping from players WOULD lag other players on the server.

Today in the BF2 network code thou, this is really not an issue. The only user who will lag from a high ping is the user that has the high ping, and if that ping is only over 300 will he notice any real difference.

The warping factor is why I dont try to do anything while the ping is high out of courtesy to other players and i notice the lag it as I'm allover the place.

Just seems that it kicks you as soon as your ping registers high instead of allowing the high ping for say 5-10 seconds then kicking.
