Hi all,

I'm still pretty new to PR but I have been mapping for a while and have decided to make a map for this mod.

I would like some feedback as to what kind of maps people want and what kind of things people like.

I have a few ideas and my favorite one is a night time urban GB (or US) vs Insurgent Counter-Attack map. The idea being that the Insurgents have mounted an uprising against the occupiers and the Allied forces have to hold on to key positions until reinforcements arrive (in the shape of tanks, attack heli's etc).

I'm not entirely sure about basing it on a real place. I think I'd rather make a realistic fictional place a supposed to an approximation of a real place (if you see what I mean), and therefore more realistic.

Well any comments or thoughts would be appreciated so let me know.

realistically it would be very unrealistic as far as I know for Insurgents to coordinate a propper Counter-Attack as it takes a hell of alot of coordination, planning and general communication, something which the insurgents really cant do that effectively and never heard of them even attempting let alone pulling off a real life counter attack soo ehhh, would be a pretty bad map concept if your trying to make anything at all realistic.

Actually I have seen a few videos of pretty organanized terrorists, assaulting checkpoints in convoys of 5, assaulting FOB's (there is this one video), little do you know, the mobile phone in iraq was a huge blow to the coalition soldiers

oh I'm sure they do abit of planning etc, but nothing like a full scale counter strike.

A urban night map does sound very promising. Keep us updated!

I like the idea of a night urban map too. Seeing as how the Brits have Al Basrah (The only INS map atm) and the only night map, I'd go with something along the lines of U.S Army v.s Insurgents (Seeing as how the West Fallujah map will feature the USMC I believe).

I would just go with the standard Insurgency mode, , as I believe the devs don't really like the concept of Insurgents fighting a head-to-head battle.

yeah night or Day us vs. Ins is good.

Night Urban would be cool

I personally like maps with lots of variation in terrain types.

Agree with rhino that the insurgents wouldnt mount a counterattack like that seen with coventional armies. But the other way like you suggested around sounds cool.

a ins urban night map would be something that would be very hard to pull off well, I would never suggest such a thing for a first time map. To do it well you would need to have good experiences of 3Ds Max lightmapping, alot of knowledge of the editor and a good idea as to how you will balance it out with a good design plan of your map. So ye, done well it would probaly be a big hit, done badly and it wouldn't work atall

Wow thanks for the responses.

The GB/US forces would be the counter attacking team not the Insurgents. From my understanding of the Counter Attack game mode one team (US/GB) starts off defending and the other (Ins) attacking. Then when the time reaches a certain point the defending team (GB/US) gets some new vehicles and can now attack enemy CPs. Is that correct? It's like the Insurgency has planned a big hit on the Allied forces and the Allied forces have to ride it out and wait for some heavy backup to arrive before mounting an attack.

Lightmapping in 3Ds max.... I have actually looked into this a bit but never actually done it. I know it's supposed to be much better which knowing the editor I can well believe. If anyone knows some good tutorials for Lightmapping in 3Ds max then if you could leave the links I would be more than grateful. Maybe I can make and test some simple or old maps to get experience and find the right settings.

I want to use the Turkish Prison sky texture from the Xpack or a similar custom texture. It's kind of a dark dusk if you don't know it. So it's not pitch black moon in sky night.

I am already planning and researching and trying things out in the editor.

One thing I wanted to ask was about object heavy maps and how to best avoid overloading the map with statics or is there a way around this?

Ahhh and I remember something else, I'd like to use the destroyed versions of the PR Afghan destructible buildings, is there any way I can do this?

Is that really true?

I dont think the US or GB would ever be in the postion when aginst insurgants to need to use a counter attack stratige, its hardly ever used and really only used as a last resort, like the russians when the gemrans where on the doorstep of Moscow, they used it as really a last resort, months of planning and preperation went into it and its really what stopped the Russians from being crushed in the early part of the war. I just dont see it happening aginst insurgants, ask a MI for more advice.

What's an MI?

If not Counter-Attack then what game mode would you suggest?

Here's a more thorough explanation of my thinking with regards to the Counter-Attack game mode.

The kind of scenario I am trying to replicate is one that might have taken place in Basra in the events that preceded the ceasefire with the Mahdi Army prior to the British withdrawal in 2007. One of my references has been events documented in the first 20 minutes of this report by Jane Corbin for BBC Panorama:

In the film Lt Col Patrick Sanders says "The Shia Militia effectively tried to drive us out of Basra". Sheikh Abdul-Sattar Al-Bahdli states that the militia engaged in "attacks which were openly mounted". Corbin goes on to say "The Mahdi Army had simple tactics; Besiege the palace (The main British base inside Basra city) from the surrounding streets and prevent supplies from getting through to the British".She then describes "One clip [that] shows 10 motor rounds falling in less than 2 minutes". Lance Corporal Jay Cox elaborates on the attacks "Militia... had accommodation blocks, cook house and battalion HQ picked out as targets so rounds would regularly hit your accommodation". Lance Corporal Kevin Bagling "It's like an alarm clock some days. Six O'clock in the morning guaranteed, scuff times in the afternoon, scuff times at night.."

Rather than a specifically planned counter-attack my idea centers more around a siege and a reaction to that siege. GB (or US) forces are holding key points in the city say a bridge and a local police compound as well as their heavily fortified main base in a palace. The Insurgents can attack and cap all of these CPs but the GB main base will be extremely difficult to penetrate let alone cap. The British have to hold these points to run down the Insurgent tickets, if they loose any then they will suffer ticket bleed and they will only be able to recap them once the counter-attack threshold is crossed. Once this is passed extra armor and air support will become available and the GB forces can re-assert control, cap any lost CPs and neutralize the enemy.


Maybe a different game mode would be better suited to the siege scenario, if anyone has any suggestions I'm open to ideas.

An insurgent motor weapon like the ones used in the film would be incredible in terms of realism but I can't mod and I do have some idea as to how much work it is, I'll put it in the suggestion thread and maybe in the future I guess, if it's not already been suggested (I did read it but can't recall it of the top of my head).
