The title says it all. Also, what makes you "follow" your leader into battle?

Good communication (in squad and with commander), able to take bad events in stride, can have a laugh.
At the basic level: ensures there is always an RP, Gives orders and waypoints.

Talks. Keeps a RP up as much as practical. Can rethink the assault once it's apparent the tardrush isn't working. Can fall back and DEFEND, and keep his squad defending because I promise some bad guy is gonna stroll in here and grab this flag the second we leave. Some rule with an iron fist, some are pretty laid back. Doesn't matter to me either way. What's important is that we are having a good time, whether that means having a laugh or kicking a$$.

Y'all basically said it all... But I might add: a squad leader should not mumble, be indecisive (UH... UM... Duh... etc.), stutter, and speak a different language than the rest of the squad...
(Unless you are me, confusing ppl and shout orders at them in Chinese, French, and Chinglish :lol

A squad leader who can keep the squad where it needs to be, but have a good laugh and enjoy the game.

I think that Cheomesh is a cool guy. Eh uses his officer kit and doesn't afraid of anything.

A squadleader I'll stick with will:
1. Communicate with the squad consistently and clearly using VOIP (but not keep up too much radio chatter). Call out contacts using compass bearings.
2. Communicate with the commander (and let us know he's doing so) so we get transpo, evacs, build orders, etc.
3. Has the Officer kit and sets RPs frequently but intelligently
4. Have a strategy and stick with it (i.e. not run back to a flag that's gone grey after we've hiked half the map, someone else will take care of it and we are in position to take the next flag when possible)
If he also uses some military jingo and keeps up the suspension of disbelief, that's cool too.
I think that's it. Most SLs I've played with are quite good. Some are more newbish but as I'm not a great SL myself, I cut them slack too!

Isn't full of self-esteem or arrogant, so I can actually talk to him as commander...

As long as the person is nice and polite I'm happy.

Always decides and communicates the squads main objective, e.g. cap flag x or hold ridge.
Uses his imagination to come up with clear simple method/idea of how to complete the objective and communicates this. E.g. "we will move to hill X, spot and suppress enemy then move in" - said well before reaching hill X.
This means the squad is always very focused, and if the squad fails the reason is generally very clear - bad choice of objectives or poor method/ basic tactics!
Unless you know EXACTLY WHY YOU WIN and WHY YOU LOOSE (loosing equating mixture of not achieving main objective with in a reasonable time and/or dying lots and lots) you can never ever be confident in achieving victory.

However:
A Sqaud leader that listens to the commander (if he is giving orders that make sense) is one i like. Or one that actually knows what they are doing (if they do, and they do it badly i just advise them)

I've had that happen to me many times, even when my orders were good:
"2 move off west beach and head for Dam, sqaud 3 can defend"
"Sqaud 3 sucks, this flag would go down if it wasen't for us"

Best squad leader i have ever played with has been Cheomesh, he always sets rally's, communicates with the CO (even if he is a dumbass), can have a good laugh, and has catchy phrases like :Militia Hold your Weapons High.

A strong, masculine voice. It turns me on.
No, but seriously, the worst squad leaders are the ones who don't set rallies and play kits other than officer the whole game--and the ones without VOIP. Nothing is worse than a squad leader without VOIP.
