Tank driver's view obstructed by hatch opening.

I know that this is not a glitch or a coding error, but it seems that as the driver of the challenger II when the gunner moves the cannon to a certain side, the hatch opening of the tank gets in the way of the drivers view. This becomes annoying when trying to point out the big red suicide truck coming our way, or trying to navigate my way out of a tough spot. By the time the gunner swings that big canon around lots of different scenarios happen, non of which are good. Well is this supposed to happen? I mean the hatch wouldnt be open would it? Was this done for some purpose or was this just overlooked as a minor inconvenience? (Could mean the decision between life or death at times)

I think the same problem exists for all the tanks. I haven't had a go of the challenger yet, but it's definitely there for the US and MEC tanks. (not sure about PLA tank.)
When the gunner looks directly backward, the hatch cover blocks the driver's view.
"Why are you driving around in reverse you fool?", I hear you say. But most of the time it occurs during "tactical", considered, pull-back operations...

The problem is, the hatch can't be shut without redoing the tanks. Which as I'm sure you'll guess - is a helluva lot of work.
Tho Billy's got it right - the turret-facing-rearward thing mostly happens during a paniced flight away from an enemy tank, I'd suggest that retreating backwards with the turret facing forwards is a little more sensible - tougher armour up front! Doesn't stop the same problem happening tho.
Just one of those things to live with for now I think guys.

How is having an invisible sheet of steel stuck on the top of the tank more realistic than a tank driving around with its cupola open in a combat zone?
It would be highly irritating - the forums would start getting threads about "I shot at a tank's turret gunner and it pinged off an invisible thing!"

Opaque then? Like Darkened/Tinted Glass - It's there, visible but for cosmetic purposes only (it's not actually invisible but without being able to close the damn thing ...), and the commander can get a more unobstructed view. Nit picking doesn't serve a purpose ...

It's not nit picking. It's a fact; people have said that the hatch being open is unrealistic - I'm saying that an invisible hatch is less realistic.

Not 100% true, T-90 and Type98 both have their hatches as a seperate objects. It's very easy to close those hatches, and make them auto-open when there is a MG gunner.

BF2 does not use hitboxes, it uses collision meshes for projectile impacts. And it may be possible to make the cupola hatch invisible only for the driver

3 man crew. No top gunner exposed.
Tank commander uses commander optics that the driver uses now.
Driver has his own optics up front in a 180 degree arc and an optional view to look directly behind for backing up.
Gunner keep as it is now.
Three eyes on the field. Driver is forwards and sometimes back. Both TCO and Gunner are 360 degree field. The only think you lose is the MG on top unless you make that controllable remotely by CO.
