Shrapnels?

Actually explosions are less powerful than they should be IMHO, mostly due to the lack of shrapnels. If I remember correctly there was a simple solution that was put to add shrapnels in some Op. Flashpoint mod (I think).
They simple have put low-velocity bullets instead of actually visible shrapnels and it worked very good.
So what do you think? Waste of time and resources? Or maybe a good idea?

I kinda like the sound of this.
I can remember a post asking if it was possible to make it so a soldier could try to save his comerades by diving onto a grenade.
If this shrapnel idea worked and is deemed a worth while idea, It may be possible to save you team mates in such a way.

Sounds Interesting. I like it!

Yea. The good thing about it is that you can even see the puff when they hit the ground. It's a good effect and back then it didn't affect performance. But I don't know how things work in BF2 engine.

Interesting idea (Can't believe I missed this earlier). I wonder if it's possible, if done right you might be able to avoid a deadly grenade by hitting the deck, and letting the shrapnel fly over you, or you could pull off some dramatic move by falling onto the grenade itself and absorb all the bullets.

Good I dead hope fuly some 1 who Knows the engin enough can tell us if its possible!

It seems like it would be a lot of work and it might impact performance for almost no gameplay change. If it doesn't impact the performance though go for it.

I'm all for the idea. This can help make gernades behave more realistically, and can help make those "epic" moments where a daring brave soul dives on the gernade to save his team mates.

That sounds pretty cool!

Handy medics can save the daring selfless soldier as well. <3

That sounds pretty cool, and maybe you could add a feature where if a grenade lands close to your squad, one of the members could jump onto the grenade and take the explosion instead of going off like it normally does. I think that would be a pretty difficult idea to do but I'm just throwing it out there.

Oh me? I'm just gathering up the reasons why this probably won't work on the BF2 engine
Heh, no really, this sounds like a good idea/method of doing it. Might be worth someone looking into. It all depends on whether or not you could set a group of bullets to shoot out from a grenade in a somewhat random spread and have the rounds not be effective past a certain short range[wouldn't want them flying across the map, would we?]
Although, I think grenades should still have the blast effect whether someone's on it or not, cuz I don't think PR would be able to reduce it if someone was on it. You'd need the blast radius they already have AND the bullet shrapnel to make a good set up, but like I said, I'm not too sure if you can have a body absorb the actual blast effect[the bullets, if they work, you could probably have a body absorb, though]
Thats all maybe, and just me thinking aloud btw, I'm not a modder of weapons.

from a test i did with 100 projectiles coming out of a gun at the same time and impacting, it caused my computer to lag down to 2 fps for about 2 sec. so if there was say 10 explosions that were using shrapnel i dont think a server would be able to handle the load. also my pc runs pr at 1680x1050, all high and 85-100 fps so i really dont think it is just my pc that would cause that much lag.

Lol, then I see the reasons why BF2 engine sucks. Back in Flashpoint there was no performance loss at all, just seemed like a normal grenade blowing in the game.
Well, I'm desappointed.

Yea this would work nicly.
I know your talking about more than just grenades, and it could be applied to other explosives in the game.
If im clearing a room, i want shrapnel to ricochet around for a sec so im sure there isnt a little dweeb camping the doorway.
Three things that should realisticly be added to grenades are...
(A)SHRAPNEL
(B)SHOCKWAVE
(C)BLURRED VISION
And i know (B) and (C) are in it to a certain degree, but all im saying is, its realistic if all three dynamics are present.
However, how many bullets would be needed to emulate the shrapnel, and if everyone threw all their grenades at once on screen would it crash their game?

well from my tests 100 bullets laged my out, so for the amount of shrapnel to make this real it would just cause way to much lag.

^^^^ That has always been the experience of the Devs when they've played with the idea of actual shrapnel as opposed to damage-field shrapnel too, I believe.

Thanks for throwing that out there, try taking some time to read the posts before yours.

Increasing the efectiveness of grenades is one thing, but....
I dont think the idea of throwing ones self on a grenade should be included in the game.
My reason....
In real life....this is one of the most hallowed, selfless, and brave acts to take place on a battlefield.
Almost 100% of the time the soldier or Marine does not survive the detonation.
He has made the snap descision in a single moment that the lives of those "brothers" around him are placed higher than that of his own.
And for that he gives his own life.
I dont know how this act is revered in other countries, but here in the United States...it usually results in a posthumous Congressional Medal of Honor....the United States military's highest award.
Im sure it is just as much a sacred act in other countries as well.
I just dont feel this selfless act needs to be "cheapened" by placing it in a game where players just respawn seconds later.
Just my very humble opinion.

Well you know... if this is true, then i will equipp my soldier with some dragonskin body armor and that nade shouldnt do too much damage to me even if im laying right ontop of it, lol.
