uhh, okay, how exactly are laser guided bombs put on target?

I know i've asked this before, but I searched the forums, I went on the guide, and I read the manual, and there is no explanation of laser guided bombs and how they are used

so can someone please explain in detail how laser guided bombs are actually put on a target?

Stay over 600 altitude.

Fly over a target that is lasered.

A good time to drop the bomb is when you hear your pilot say something like "I've got lock"

The way to target something with a laser is bring out the soflam, aim and click once. The box will last 15 seconds.

I was lasering targets for a frogfoot pilot the other day and he thought the Jdams weren't laser guided. I'm guessing he was just dropping them at low altitude and wasting them. :\

so, you just drop a dumb bomb? and is it kind of the same with missiles, you lock onto a target that is lazed?

and second, I want to ask a question about helicopter laser guided missiles. Can the gunner laze a target like a soflam does? the manual says that if a gunner switches to laser targeted mode he can press "alternate fire" which Im assuming is right mouse click, and laze a target and launch a missile at it

I'd try it now but I dont have PRM installed as I had to format my hard drive, and the weekends are the only time I get a decent connection speed to download 2GB worth of data

For dropping the jets bombs (jdams) you just fly forward and drop the bomb along with doing all the other stuff I said up there.

For using the jets laser guided missiles you have to actually aim and fly at the target and there will be a little box which is the laser target (if someone targeted something) and you have to have that box inside the targeting box on the jets HUD and it will lock on and then you can fire the missile. For these instead of being high up you have to be within a certain distance to lock on and of course be flying at the target instead of high over it.

With the helicopters hellfire missiles you can just use laser guided which you just click to fire and the missile will be guided to the crosshair and for laser targeted it works like the jets laser targeted missiles but you can also right click like you said and set the laser yourself, but that is kind of pointless when you have the laser guided mode.

the bombs are not JDAMs. The JDAM is the area attack option on the commanderscreen the bombs on the plane are regular laser guided bombs and they can also be used as dumb bombs. 400 is the correct altitude that the bombs need to be activated although 600 is the safest way of scoring a hit.

now to the lasertargeting on the helicopters. Its kinda bugged so you're better of using the ones you guide yourself.

ehhh, 500 is the min I'm pretty sure, 600 or even 700 is the safe altitude as your altidue meter on your HUD only goes off the sea/water level in your map, and not off the terrain, so if the target is on a hill, you are going to have to fly even high for the bomb to arm in time.

I have a question, why do the gravity bombs take so long to arm? Is that realistic? Do they even need to arm at all in real life? :p

If the mod has it wrong will it be fixed?

well in r/l they do have a arming timer, so if the bombs are dropped by mistake at a low altitude it dont blow the eneiter plane up with it etc.

I can't tell you the realistic arming timer but the main reasons for also doing it ingame are too:
stop them being constantly spammed as dumb bombs at low altitudes like in vBF2 and to stop the bombs locking on at really odd angles and going strait to the target bugs we had in the early versions of it.

I made this video on the subject, hope it helps.

How to drop a laser guided bomb

The video is a bit crude, havent got that much experience with premiere and ill probably remake it once the patch is out, if you still have any questions or feedback on the video, PM me or leave a reply here and ill try to answer and implement it into the next video.

good vid on how to do it from the cockpit

i think the actual lasing via soflam and using the communication to ensure a successful run is the harder part.

especially moving targets
