Engineers carrying both an assault riffle and a shotgun seems like overkill. They already carry C4, landmines, and a shotgun... why add a rifle? And do real-life military engineers run around with shotguns on their back?

Please, one or the other. Not both. Otherwise why not give them an rpg and stinger too?

It's for door breaching purposes.
