I'm using a logitech usb mic with no problems. Everyone hears me clearly so I wouldn't say they were **** imo.
Sound tabs, I'm not sure which one is used so I have just set both to that mic. Make sure to turn the volume up to full.
But you need to do this to get it to work properly.
Try Muvixer -
Muvixer - The fixer for your audio mixer!
Basically battlefield likes to tell xp which mic input it wants to use even if you want to use a different one. All muvixer does is tell battlefield to f**k off, and use the one you selected.
Set it to run when windows starts, and select which mic input you want to use.
Hardly uses any memory and is free.
The mic you set with the logitech is the ak5370 under soundcard. (I think it will have the same name for yours)
Let me know if this works for you.

I use a USB set (Plantronics) but find I have to make sure its plugged in BEFORE starting a game otherwise it isn't recognized.
No problems at all communicating (though note the BF2 mic set up program doesn't appear to recognize USB sets) and sound is great.
Shouldn't have to re-boot if its USB but might have to restart PRM if you plug in after game has started.

Hmmmm. Had a similar problem myself a while back before i purchased a razor barracuda... What i found out however is that my power source in my computer is not the strongest. Having all kinds of usb devices connected to my comp sucked up all the power and thus...I was not able to hear anything out of my mic. After disconnecting a few devices the whole thing worked fine.... Too bad that by the time i found this out my new 5.1 headset was in the mail. LOL.... Do you want my usb headset. Logitech 350 pro (300, 370?? Something like that).
