Project Virtual Reality?

imagine, playing PR WITHOUT a keyboard... WITHOUT a mouse...WITHOUT joysticks and microphones. imagine doing you weekley exercise in a nights game. imagine feeling the bullet, the explosion the knife, the tank that just rolled over you. imagine your eyes not getting distracted by the edge of our monitors, or the bright lights reflected of the screen.

imagine. being ingame quite literally, doing the job of a soldier, virtually, on PR, without signing you life to the armed forces.

and guess what, its bloody here.

VR Gloves: INITION | VR Gloves

Vest: TN Games...3rd Space Gaming Vest

the gun and moving issue solved: zerosign.net VirtuSphere - Totally Immersive VR

and your wireless headset on your nuggin.

although it might cost abit, and you might need to buy a five thousand pound PC to use it all and run PR and yes it looks extremely geeky and the missus wont let you have it anywhere but the garage. and still i crave to use it.

although maybe not yet, maybe an idea for something as late a version 9 or after, but definately as prices come down i'll be buying these, and using them on whatever games can handle 'em. how about you guys?

i just hope the PR guys have started writing the code to enable VR, we might have mortars in the game! and silly jumping out and reasonable climbing in. i see it happening, and im soooooooooooooooooooooo god damn excited.

i wanna hear some feedback on my finds. does anyone reckon it'll ever happen?

I like the idea but I really don't want to feel a tank running over me. :P I also don't think it will happen. The mod doesn't need this so I don't think its needed to be added. i would like to see them add new stuff then this.

good reply, i think the latest guns ammo and armour are top priority along with erros and bugs. but the VR treadmills and gloves and lightguns and headsets are still extremely expensive (millionaire's might buy em tho, meh!) so im talking like in 3 years time or so. prices then should be about right and readily available to buy online. (i might have built a garage by then too haha!)

although lightguns and vests are here now, and yes expensive but in a year or 2 maybe not so. FPS's have recently hit a high and still going strong, making these products more sought after by nerds and geeks (sad to say it, but people like me. lol.) which in turn gives companies a market to appeal to and hey presto, everybody then does it. (much like with internet, it started out with a couple of companies, now every company has a service) so the future might be good for this system, if not in PR definately in others.

oh yeah, and the vest ain't all that strong, if you get ran over by a tank it'll feel like being tapped by a pole at the front and back (pretty lightly) at the same time. although you'll know you just got squished ingame, even when looking at your map.

J0k3r do you see yourself buying this? if i get a few views on this i might spam TNGames till they start working with PR lol.

I strongly doubt that this will ever happen.

Virtual Reality gaming does look fun...but then again, its going to be really expensive and you'd have to be a millionaire to actually use this equipment and how can you play BF2 or PR with VR stuff...it will be really difficult...i would like to see the british army use this stuff though, that would be well good..actually moving about in a 3d world being part of the british army and fighting 3d insurgents...but then again that sounds more like PR for BF2 lol.

but i have seen some screenshots that the army uses the half-life 1 engine and uses the HL1 engine to train soldiers etc...

they also use the unreal 3 engine, and the point im making is NOT the price, remember back to 1990 home PC's had started to make a hit on the market and they used to be really expensive (800 pounds for a PC with 8mb RAM 266hz Pentium 1 and a graphics gard with NO RAM, no USB no overclocking no performance and yet we used them for games).

also consoles like the megadrive had very expensive price tags at release (as the PS3 does now) yet i can gaurantee prices go down, quickly too.

in 2 to 3 years theses devices will be affordable to anyone with the space to spare.

the real question is this: is it possible to use it on an engine such as BF2 for the PR mod, and if so would anyone actually want to do so?

i mean i can imagine alot of people suchs as myself might want to stick to the keyboard for movement, rather than running around in a hampster ball. (what! you want me, to run, 1 and a half miles in 10 minutes!? your having a laugh mate!)

and others might not want to wear a shock vest ( repeated hammering for noobs like me, or maybe sensitive areas for our opposite gender).

yet some people just wont ever shake away a dual/tri/quad monitor setup (and YES people do already have quad setups!(they probably already use these lol.))

so the question again:
is it possible to use it on an engine such as BF2 for the PR mod, and if so would anyone actually want to do so?

I tried and failed.

push-ups. passed
Sit-ups . passed
Pull-ups. passed

1 and a half mile run!!!! jesus christ i thought i was going to die out there! oh yeah, and it took me 22 minutes. they didn't even have to tell me i'd failed i already knew it.

oh yeah and another point, im pretty sure alot of guys [edit: and girls] would rather die for a foolish mistake in a game than in life. you can't re-spawn in life.

That's what they said about computers like today's, 50 years ago.

Jesus were you crawling? I can do it in 9 and a half and army wankers still tell me thats slow!

Without doubt this stuff is the future, how long it will take, I couldnt say. Will add an extra interesting twist to gameplay for sure.

'C'mon Private we gotta get to the move marker to save our RP!!'

'I can't I've got a stitch!'

Fatties WILL be ejected from my squad :)

^it would sooooooooooo eliminate the dolphin divers (ouch! i just broke my jaw!) and bunny hoppers, and incourage fitness (do your exercise while gaming! hell yeah!)

it could increase manoueverability, gameplayability and be cheap to buy in just 3 years. (if at the moment a "cyber glove" is £1000 think how much its going to drop (how much was the xbox 360 3 years ago!).^

and no im not talking about implementing it into this engine, it would be impossible, but in 3 years time do we all really think PR will still be run from this same engine? and that servers will still be run for it?

im talking of planning ahead, checking out new technology and games, and choosing the game for the future PR mod (in 1 or 2 years) could just provide an answer. the vest is already vastly used in games like Halo Crysis, and UT3. the guns? no. they are like kiddies guns to be played with mario at the moment. so who will be the first to make an FPS rifle version? (my bet is on thrustmaster). and yet the Omnidirectional treadmills are slowly begging to get a following (the ball is not the only one available). the headset screens have been out for 10 years now and the wireless headphones/mic set? been out for 4/5 years (maybe longer)

so yes i know its coming and i cant wait. but will i be able to play PR or a game like PR? i bloody hope so.

I believe . . . one day it will be possible to play any game with this new technology. Of course, that's a bit of a dreamer attitude. :p

It requires coding from the game to allow this, right? Certain movements trigger something in the game. If it's like the Wii, and some Wii games have terrible movement recognition, it has to be well implemented.

Also, the "controllers" wouldn't work with all games. Like joysticks, they'd need special drivers, no?

Still, it's for us to laze about and find out, and for those pioneers to make it happen, and to bring it into our homes.

that would be awesome......but those dont look like they won't be in Best Buy catalogue by next Christmas......and you'd better start saving up now for a system that
- is experimental
- doesnt play PC games, only virtual reality games they make spceially for it
- not to mention that you wouldn't be able to FLY, or GO PRONE, or jump over things without falling to your knees....

the thing about that is... its bulky, you cannot do everything in there. It also will cost as much as a car(prices pending, so type of car pending)
Plus, you need to be a millionare who plays games all day and has a huge room to play those things to their worth.

That would be cool, but ill stick with my kb, my mouse, and my joystick/throttle thanks.

But one of these would be cool for flying(im a PR pilot so this thing would pay for itself in the first month)
F-16, F-22A, F-35, Flight Simulation, Viper, Fighting Falcon, Raptor, Lightning II, flight simulators, military, fighting falcon, jet, aviation, pilot, picture, tom clancy, JSF aircraft, airplane, books, crash, news, military, flight simulator, F/A-2
That would be awesome! just put in your Joystick and throttle on each side, then have your KB and mouse roll out like on certain desks.....HECK YES!
