No, hatch closed or not, the back seats 7. and 8. I think will make you "eject" into the Merlin's body. So if the Merlin needs to make a quick get away, you better run fast to the door or you're dead. That's what makes so many TKs IMO.

If the hatch is open, and you try to land, you'll probably crash. Since opening the hatch doesn't make a difference in basic transportation, I wouldn't mess with it. I heard W raises it, S lowers it.

Yup - you sustain damage for sure if you try to land after some numpty has left the door open.

I wonder if there's any way to indicate to the pilot the status of the door?

Yeah, try to keep it closed. Not only does it affect landings, it's also pretty painful if someone manages to put an RPG round in the open back.

Quite awesome watching an RPG round fly into the body, a second later out fall about 5 people and then when your mate next to you lets rip with is RPG, seeing the chopper being turned into scrap metal in quick-time. :-D

Yeah, any helpful passenger will tell the pilot the hatch is open, and request it to be closed after explaining the problems it can bring. ;)
