Realistc Chopper Damage When Landing

Many a time i've "blown-up" a chopper because i landed just a little too fast.
Well I've talked with a Black Hawk pilot recently when he flew in to our school for field day. I asked him how much damage to the chopper would occur if it hit the ground at a higher than normal landing speed.
He told me:

The birds are made to asorb quite a bit of shock, it would usually sustain that kinda landing with minimal to no damage. The pilots might get thrashed around, but it wouldnt be bad. The landing gear usually slides on the ground, if I'm coming down in a straight angle they might break off...but thats at its worst.
So as you can see, the games whole "You explode if you come in too fast" is very inaccurate... I request that the PR staff please fix it to where a landings that are a little too fast dont "blow up" and kill everyone inside.

A damage is OK, but exploding is a little exagerated. I think it could be considered for a tweak.

lol,
but good idea,but this should be for any heli really, Merlin included, they shouldn't sustain that much damage!

Would that even be possible? i mean if you increase the "health" of the chopper it also can take more shots. Or is there a way to separate health taking by shots and health taking by ground for example.

what we want is harder undersides of choppers, as IRL i think they are made to be able to pretty much withstand an RPG if it hits the bottom or something like that, would be cool!

Hitboxes? Never dealt with these, but I think you can make certain parts take more/less damage than another spot.

Nah i think its fine the way it is.....proper pilots dont smack their helicopters down hard, neither should you.....
And if you're landing hard enough to break the landing gear, then your aircraft would be grounded for repairs anyway.....
I think the explosion should remain, as you have to hit quite hard to make it go bang, and to make that happen means you did something wrong...
If you have to upgrade something with the choppers, I'd like to see those with wheels gain the ability to do rolling touchdowns, and have better suspension. Oh and implement going light on the skids, and include torque effects, and autorotations and, and.....

Hmm yeah it is possible make the the wheels so strong you can land faster and harder. Atleast i think

I would rather the devs spend more time on the actual physics of the Choppers, but It could be tweaked a bit. I want to see more helos get shot down and not immediately explode into 2 pieces of sheet metal.

Proper soldiers don't play like noob head smacktards but the Devs still code to discourage this don't they?
Best case scenario or ideal landings aren't what you code the limit for. You have to have a threshold that makes sense. Really its like driving a car in a game where the second you scape the curb with your wheels the tire goes totally flat. It isn't realistic but it also isn't acceptable just because you're supposed to not do it.
Its like the way they're changing the suppression effect so that when you shoot the ground right in front of you you don't suppress yourself. You aren't SUPPOSED to shoot that poorly but they still have to make it so that it doesn't ruin your day right?

WHAT?! Mods aren't perfect? This is madness!
Moving on, I have no problem with this change, as long as some damage (30-40%), at least a little loss of control (for example, tail rotor or rudders), and perhaps some harm to the passengers (30-40% health) is incurred at high speeds. If they hit the ground by the skids at ludicrous speeds, everyone should die and the helicopter should be sent below 20%, but it should never explode until it hits the ground at another angle at equally ludicrous speeds.
In fact, this could be rolled into the 'movement' there's been to minimize all vehicle explosions in PR. I can't say whether you Devs have tried to implement that; if you have, this would be a great addition to the concept.

It'd be nice if there were some way of having the broken tracks effect apply to choppers. That'd be kinda fun.
Good idea though, there are too many explosions in this game that shouldn't happen, unfortunately most of them can't be removed it seems.

it already happens, if you lose a certain amount of health in a chopper you'll lose rudder control it doesn't happen every time but its there, and if you take enough damage you're engine will cut out and you'll crash land and depending on altitude either blow up or manage to escape.

I'm not sure how this illustrates your argument for making the chopper easier to thump down hard?
I'm surprised ppl find this such an issue is all.....I can think of a lot more things I'd want to fix with the choppers before I got to this.....most notably the way they behave on the skids\wheels....
Anyway, I dont find it a big problem.....

Really, you'd have to do some severe damage to a helicopter to make it explode in real life. What's going to normally happen is the blast frag warhead used in most antiaircraft applications are going to damage the rotor blades or rudder, resulting in a loss of altitude and eventually a crash, although not at high enough velocities that the aircraft will explode.

There are some funky effects already on the choppers, except they only work in local server, not on a dedicated server.

Go play on Local and damage your chopper. It will start to spin heavily and eventually crash. Not like the mid-air explosion on dedi servers
