Idea: give the tank a fourth seat without a .50 cal, so that the tank commander can switch weapons and use his kit binoculars to spot.
About that video, that guy is yet another loud-mouthed, near-inept and (apparently) politically biased fool - why is he on radio?

The tanks are fine with a two man crew at the moment. The top position is normally only used for transporting supporting repair crews and isn't really manned in armor combat for obvious reasons.

If you can make the driver commander zoom 2x than this isn't hardcoded.
(Like press '0' then u get your binoculars ...)

The way I look at it, the correct crewing for a tank is 3 men, as such, if at all possible the 3rd position should be limited to members of the same squad, in the same way as the driver and gunner are (nothing worse than a blue dude getting in while your parked and getting his freak on with the .50 :evil . I would disagree with Mobius, that the top position is usually unmanned during tank on tank battles, unless your tank is camping, and your hiding in the roll back ditch the tanks about to use, the engineer is always at the .50, getting out during an engagement is suicidal at best. Just because your not involved in the shooting doesn't mean your not an important crew member, so i would say binoculars are a definite must. The main problem in the .50 is your view distance, tank vs tank engagements usually happed at a greater range than you can see, meaning as a spotter, you only provided a false sense of security and you can easily misidentify threats. Most of the time, while stationary, I'm lying on top of the tank turret with my bino's out, not an ideal situation when you need to move quick but at least you can help out.
Not sure about a 4th seat idea (similar to in the AA's), It may be a practical workaround, but it would most likely end up getting used as a 4th seat, most probably by a blue dude, getting his freak on with his sniper rifle Then you have the obvious abuse, like 4th seat HAT's, AA's, etc making the tank totally overpowered.

Guys what no one gets is that in todays world, no tank commanders really sit on the top. They have a small camera to look though hence view of tank driver. And as Mobius its barley manned.

Soucy, with all due respect, im not sure you get it.
TCs and Loaders often operate unbuttoned, as it gives them much improved awareness as well as acccess to additional weaponry. Unfortunately, this is also more exposed, but often this risk is taken. Most casualties in Iraq on tanks come not from the driver/gunner or turret penetration, but from small arms or RPGs on the unbuttoned TC or loader. In Urban ops the main gun is rarely used and its rarely something that requires a 2nd shot such as in a tank on tank engagement, meaning the loader can operate his weapon.

What would be useful would be a TUSK type weapons mount for the third crew member, only operable by an engineer or what have you, allowing them to be a third observer while remaining unexposed to enemy fire.

Limit only to Engineers or Officers in the same squad as the driver/gunner?
