Is it possible to add weather to PR, such as light rain and fog or even change from day time to night time in one round of Kashan for example? I remember playing a bf2142 map that had light rain and snow may be you could incorporate it into the game, would look great on Fools Road and Mestia.

Would be good, but its an even bigger load on your computer. Rain is also notoriously diificult to make look convincing. For instance you need different shaders to make everything look wet, you need puddles, and shaders to look like drops splashing into the puddles. On the plus side, you could bring the fog closer, seeing as its raining. It could be done, but its quite a big job. Dunno about snow, I imagine its quite easy except you'd need to model the snow on the trees. Would be great for a bit of variety, but possibly an idea for new maps rather than existing ones?

Oooo, speaking of which, does anyone need any rain recordings in a forest, cos I made a brilliant one from a forest in Scotland last year.....

well you could have snow that doesn't settle. (i remember there being a version of Wake island with snow knocking around on the net ages ago.)

The sounds created by weather would be awesome!

I remember the old operation desert storm map (was the the name?) had a sandstorm and didn't lag my machine.

Would certainly be interesting too see more weather effects, the 2142 engine did well to show weather.

i think as far as weather and maps are conserned, it would require a complete overhaul. Would look great but it would quadruple the workload of the typical map design, not to mention the time it takes to figure out how all that stuff works and practise with it first before implimenting it. i reckon it will have to be down to the guys in community modding section to figure that one out and perfect it. dont forget, vehicles would have to be shaded as well, and things like droplets on the windscreens.

The engine doesnt support real rain afaik. You'd have to work around the engine limits somehow, and i guess that'll look odd.

yes sounds like a great idea, but its one of those things we can't have because not everyone has super computers than can handle the rain especially on huge maps like kashan. (ok it doesnt really rain in the desert) itll just be one of those things that can improve realism, but unable to create well for hte game.

What I have always wondered is that its always nice weather in all the maps. When it rains the sight is going down, more fog etc.

weather in BF2 is really ****, the best you can really do is thunder and lightning which is in OGT.

doing rain via a effect is really shitty, you need a view distance on the map of like 50m to make it look like the rain is in fact covering more than a little radius around the player, and then if the player looks up into the sky or even 45degs up the rain looks even worse, it falls down on its side...

snow can be done pretty well but still not that well...

BF2142 can do weather effects much better since it has them built into the engine...

Lets rob a bank so we can buy the source code...

like I said, view distance of 50m and try looking up into the sky.

let alone the amount of partials that is needed to make good rain which cause lots of lag.

here you have two screenys, and yes okay, the view distance is pretty low, but in rain you do not see that far anyways and in motion it really looks nice

Like I say, rain is very hard to make look convincing :)

yep, Here is some shots of the testing I did on rain ages ago, 07-28-2006 to be exact :p

Image

looks fine, thou wasn't for the most part when walking around etc, you can out run the rain etc.

Image

thats how it looks when you look into the sky...

This is the best rain I managed to make, I call it froggy rain :p

The problem with it is that if you tried to make loads of this rain, you would get a huge performance decrease as well as hardly any rain drops as you had reached your max partials.

So ye, to do good looking rain that is convincing on the BF2 engine, with more than a 50m view distance is really not very possible.
