That's the one I used, too. Great tutorial.
Get Gmax - which is free - or 3ds Max - which costs money, but is what most people are using - and just get working. It's all about getting experience. The more, the better.
Another tip once you've gotten the hang of it: in 3ds Max you can bind your keys to different actions. As far as I know, "rotate view" isn't bound to anything by default, although there is a button for it in the bottom-right corner. I always map that to my V key. You'll probably use it loads, so it's good not to have to click the button every time. If you ask me, that's one of the most useful bits of customisation you can do.

For me, holding alt and middle mouse button was the default for rotating view.

Well, I never figured that out. I'm senile, so I can't remember all those combinations.
To open .RARs, just get WinRAR, extract the files somewhere, then open them in VLC. Both programs are free. Should work just nicely.
Oh, note that the first part of the Beretta tut may be slightly broken, so it might not play. It didn't work for me.

If you scroll down though the comments you should find a link to a working part 1. Like KP said just download WinRar then open it click extract and it will do it by itself after that the go to the fold that you extracted it to and open it. If WMP is set as your default media player then right click on the file and got to open with and select VLC and your sweet
good luck with it
Jakegaudetenterprise.com there is link to download part 1
KP thx for the help earlier

Hehe KP you old bugger
I see the beretta tutorial has been posted. Its the one I started out with back a year ago. Although I never did a beretta. I made a Colt 1911 instead using the same technique.
along the way I started paying attention to the "creating a weapon for source" tutorials:
Part 1: modeling a glock
Creating a Weapon for Source tutorial - Mod DB
Part 2: unwrapping and skinning the glock (its where I learned unwrapping)
Creating a Weapon For Source - Part 2 tutorial - Mod DB
Part 3: animating the glock and importing into source
Creating a Weapon for Source - Part 3 download - Mod DB
I used all of these 4 tutorials as guidelines and watched some of the videos several times as well as never seeing some of them. basically the first video in the beretta tut as well as the glock tut is importing and I still use that technique when setting up and preparing to model.
The 2nd and 3rd videos of either I watched a few times as well, then I got the big picture of what was going on. Then I went for it and used them to look up stuff when I got stuck.
Other than that I think these basic tutorials might help out getting started.
Free 3d Max video tutorials from video-tutes.com
All the stuff I have mentioned here is shown in 3d studio max. I recommend downloading a 30 day trial of it as you can use that time to figure out if modeling is something you want to mess around with. Quite a few people give up right away - however I strongly advice to push on through the rough spots in the start, its really worth it when you get the hang of it. Addictive too
Good hunting!

Try Edge - insert vertex (works in 3ds max, at least).
