Friendly Fire Smoke

Well, I did a search and the most relevent thing that I came up with was something about making signal flares for LZs ...etc..etc.

So... after reading about [url=
http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/ja ... troops.htm]this article[/url] a while ago, it finally clicked for me that this was something PR could use as well, and it didn't seem hard to implement either.
Paul Joseph Watson, Prison Planet wrote: Soldiers in the five-vehicle convoy set off smoke canisters to identify them as British troops, a signal understood between all coalition forces to mean that a friendly fire incident had taken place, before one of the planes again cruised in at a low level to attack the soldiers for a second time.
Though the majority of times in PR, friendly fire is either avoided or an instant action. However, on some occasions, you find yourself being fired upon by friendly troops. You aren't dead yet, and for some reason, spamming team chat with "CHECK YOUR FIRE!!!" doesn't seem like the most direct way to get only a certain person's attention. Luckily, your squad leader carries a canister or two of friendly fire smoke, recognizable by your faction!

So my suggestion...
  • Give squad leaders one or two canisters specifically labled "friendly fire smoke"
  • NATO factions should have a different color than CATA factions to prevent abuse of the smoke or any confusion
  • Insurgents and Militia, being their not-as-well-equipped/funded selves, should not have that kind of smoke
  • Vehicles should be able to pop a few canisters of this smoke themselves, though maybe someone with firsthand experience can share with us which ones have the smoke and which ones don't.

Though for gameplay's sake, give it to CO trucks and the Stryker [with it's CARC green color and shape, it could be more mistakeable for a BTR]

Not a bad idea, on the vehicles have the regular smoke for concealment then the other smoke for identiy purposes.

Sounds like a great idea and could also double up as a good ploy should you went to get away from the enemy quickly….

GIVE THEM THE GREEN TOWER SMOKE BACK! Shame it was removed, perfect for marking for air runs and for marking roofs, Blue on Blue, etc.

If this does happen, can we get it to deploy instantly like the Grenadier ones, so we don't have to wait 2-3 seconds for it to deploy properly?

waste of time, by the time you deploy the grenade and are ready to throw it you'd likely allready be dead

stuff like this only works for close air support where the friendly aircraft needs to fly around for another run, whereas if it was infantry on infantry theres just not enough time to wait for the smoke

I disagree Bringer. I have been pinned down several times by a friendly squad that wasn't paying attention. Just cause they can suppress you doesn't mean your dead.

So if you are pinned down.....how do you know for sure if the fire is friend or foe?
You pop smoke to let friendlies know to check their fire.....or pop smoke to let enemies know that you are still alive and to adjust their fire for better accuracy?

I think the idea is good....I just dont think it is useful in game enough to implement.

Bringer, I don't mean to quote myself here, but I think you need to read this paragraph again. I do agree that many times as infantry, teamkills, or 'blue on blue' attacks are almost instant kills; leaving you little time to react. However, I'm bringing out the point that there are times where you have time to take cover and find out who's shooting at you. Those are the times where this smoke comes in handy as an alternative to spamming the chat.

I can see many a confusion when the enemy takes a friendly officer kit.

"Oh no, don´t worry, thats friendly smoke, *bam* what the?"

Or

"Fire at it anyway, it might be enemies with the kit!"

:)

I'm all for it. Once I was with a squad and there was a friendly tank firing on us and for some reasons the guys wasn't reading the chat. Could have been avoided with such a smoke... or not because the guy was half blind apparently.

Glad you brought up the issue about Friendly Fire. It's been on my mind for a long time but I never went the distance to bring it up on the forums before. I suppose I simply forgot.

Although I do like the idea, but in Project Reality the incoming fire of both friendly and enemy forces are far too accurate to wait for smoke alone. Besides we have Green Smoke for the notification of an LZ drop off or extraction, and that already barely gets used at times.

Also the fact that we have that magical 3D map while in a vehicle, so friendly fire incidents are rare at times. If they do occur it's most likely because of friendly infantry firing at friendly infantry. An alternative solution to this situation is to simply create a radio call for "FRIENDLY FIRE".

Placing a "FRIENDLY FIRE" communications option next to the "NEGATIVE" button would be the most practical placement. For most games when people try to avoid friendly fire they usually use the "No" or "Negative" feature. You'd be familiar with this if you played BF1942 or anyone of it's mods. Thusly, linking it to a right-click feature would be the most natural and logical placement for gamers.

A wise idea would be to have it broadcast over the communication network. It would be the only way to have it work properly so all soldiers can hear it. Maybe if we had a "FRIENDLY FIRE" communication message and/or pairing it together when you deployed the smoke signal, it would work more efficiently.
